Eddie was a huge GAA enthusiast and a very popular figure around Drumconrath. He acted as secretary of United Gaels, an old club in Drumconrath parish. During the late 1960's and early 1970's, Eddie was a much sought after referee. Drumconrath GFC performed a guard of honour at his funeral, one of the biggest seen in the area for quite some time.
