Johnny was a member of the Baconstown Junior Hurling Championship winning team in 1973 while he also had a great footballing career with Summerhill, being a member of the 4-in-a-row team of the 1970s. Johnny's brother Christy played football with Baconstown while Christy's daughter Andrea is a current camogie and ladies football player with Na Fianna.
