U21 FC: Tones bow out

November 13, 2019

Sarán Ó Fionnagain Wolfe Tones

Bhulf Tón 1-6 Ratoath 2-16

Cé go rinne foireann Bhulf Tón sár iarracht bhí foireann Rath Tó ró láidir dóibh ar an oíche.

The opening quarter was very competitive in a game played in very good conditions for the time of year in Ratoath. At the end of the first quarter the sides were tied on 0 02 each, both Tones scores coming from Thomas Blaney while Tones keeper Darragh Kenny was called on to deny Ratoath as he parried a flick following a long through ball at the expense of a ’45.  There followed a purple patch for the home side which saw them open up a 0 08 to 0 03 interval lead. Ratoath’s dominance of Tones’ kickout where they were winning almost all the breaks provided a platform for wave after wave of attack. An Oisin Corrigan free was the sole Tones score during this period.

Ratoath added 1 02 in the opening five minutes of the second half and were now firmly in the ascendancy. Tones responded well with 1 01 inside a minute. The O Kelly Lynch brothers supplied the scores. Iarlaith used all his pace to create an opening and fired a powerful shot to net following good approach work from Sarán O Fionnagáin who played a good cross field ball to Evan Corrigan who fed the onrushing O Kelly Lynch. Eanna pointed almost immediately following a driving run. Tones were unable to maintain this momentum and conceded four points before Sarán Ó Fionnagáin pointed with a superb left footed point from distance. Ratoath’s second goal finished the contest following an intercepted pass.

This was a young Tones side in which twelve of the starting 15 are U21 next year and they battled with spirit but lost out to a physically stronger home side. Tones were best served by Adam O Neill Seán Kendall, the O Kelly Lynch brothers, Alan Lynam, Saran O Fionnagáin and Oisín Martin.

This game marked Tony Kearney’s last game in charge for the Tones and brings the curtain down on his second period in charge. He can look back with pride on his involvement with the club, an involvement which yielded numerous county titles across championship league and u21. We wish him well in the future and thank him for what he has achieved with the club over the years.
