Replying To LaLu:  "I see that 86 people turned up a home league game for the county that tonight's referee was from. Not much more to be said about football knowledge there. I had more at my child's birthday party..."
Pity he didn't go and make it 87

It's been traditional to play the final in Cooley in honour of Paddy Sheelan. Very scenic place too. 10 minutes from motorway

Very disappointing game to-day. Cannot see the point of Gaels having no forwards in position in the first half and allowing Blues to tip tap the ball across their backs to the frustration of the paying spectators. In the first half after a Gaels kick out they kept the ball for a dozen passes - some very dodgy ones - and were still only 30 Yards from their own goals. This style will not win games or bring back supporters. The Blues had it easy but as said already when tested a few times they looked weak enough. With a little luck Gaels could have had three goals. Good luck to Blues in Leinster. If they get a run they might need Lynch.

I hope there will be fun in Monasterboice to-morrow with a new name on Joe. There will be the biggest crowd since the Pope was there in 1979. Jocks for Joe.

What a finish. Congrats to all. It didn't look on till late in extra time. Had to celebrate with black sole and Tullamore dew. Might talk about performance later in week. For now it results that count. Well done panel and management.

Darver needs a small stand to shelter spectators . The other facilities are quite good, the big difference from Owenbeg is the lack of a stand. It does provide excellent facilities for training and for under age use.

Louth'S Most Consistent Senior Clubs - 1 Like(s)

Replying To Past hurler:  "Just a topic on the Top Senior clubs in Louth over the last 20 years and how they manage to keep their senior status year after year without making the drop. Obviously catchment area would play a big part in playing numbers but you obviously have to have the correct structures in place to bring underage players through. Top 5 would probably be Newtown Blues obviously at the top, St. Pats, Ardee St. Mary's, Cooley until a few years ago, Naomh Martin. Smaller clubs seem to yoyo between Senior and Inter like Clans, Gers, Brides etc as they would be smaller catchment but is that the only reason? Glyde Rangers had a massive free fall from Senior to Junior but they actually have some great footballers. Sometimes a good batch of players can come together at the same time and a team can ascent the whole way up through the ranks, St. Kevin's could be that team now. But the big senior clubs just seem to constantly have a flow of good players coming through."
In the 20 year period 1998-2017 St.Patricks have won seven Joe Wards.Newtown Blues have five and Mattock Rangers four. Why would the Blues be obviously at the top?

Frank Lynch - 1 Like(s)
Frank Lynch had a good story in last weeks Democrat about how he got fit with a cayenne pepper poltos to captain the Geraldine's to win the Christy Bellew against the Finbarrs in 1966. A three weeks solution to a cruciate problem. Nowadays we hear of lads being out for the year. Frank must have lots of great stories from Sam Maguire to Louth manager and Chairman ,the Geraldine's and everything in between. He should write a book.

Replying To bennypoor:  "Why is this competition even still going ahead did even 8 teams play in it"
Lucky for some 13 teams involving 19 clubs participated. Some very good games. Final is St.Marys v St.Moctas/ St. Brides in Darver on Saturday @5.30. Could go either way. If it's half as good as the Mocthas/ Brides v Pats semi- final it will be well worth a visit. The Clans v Cooley Shield final is also in Darver @ 5.00.on Saturday. Probably on a second pitch. Nothing like being there.

Congrats to SOM and especially to John O'Brien. One of the great warriors for Louth over the past decade. Based on to-days performance he like some of our other elder statement, could still have lots to offer a county team. Ronan Carroll also showed what we are missing. His work in lead up to St.Marys goal was impressive. It was a very competitive final with lots of hard football but again the over use of hand passes when kicking a point seemed easier took from the game. Ardee should have made better use in the first half of the strong wind which died down at half time. The SOM experience was crucial in the second half and they knew how to hold out in the final minutes. Some of the antics of the referee spoiled the play at times but it effected both sides about equally. Great day for SOM , john O'Brien and his father Pat who is such an enthuastic supporter of club and county. Good luck in Leinster.

It was great to see the excitement of the Annaminnion players and supporters in Darver on Friday night. Everyone wants to win and when a small club gets a cup it's good for the community too. Lucky it was a dry night and they got their 20 minutes to celebrate on the field before the senior match. Well done to all. That's what the GAA is all about. Pity the Westies were denied last year.

RIP Joe. He was a great player on a great team that brought Sam to the six counties for the first time in 1960 and again in 1961 in front of the biggest crowd to ever attend Croke Park. Over 90,000 supporters saw Down beat Offaly. Sean O'Neill from that team was one of the greatest footballers ever. He is up there with Mick O'Connell, Jack O'Shea and The Gooch Joe was a great thinker about the game and caused lots of discussion by his writings. He taught in The Franciscian College, Gormanstown.
