Disgraceful Scenes At Half Time - 9 Like(s)

Replying To Tirchonaill1:  "Absolutely, Mayo must have lots of cronies in about Rte, if a Tyrone player had thrown his Gps at a free taker as he about to take a free to win the All ireland you'd never hear the end of it, one of the lowest acts I've ever seen on a football pitch, not a word about it, If Tyrone had attacked the Galway players in the tunnel like that there's be calls for bans etc, typical from Rte."
That's all sanctimonious bull. If you or I were about to lose a 4th or 5th all Ireland and playing flat out for 77min we might try and distract the opposition free taker. When someone calls this 'the lowest act' they've seen you know they are spoofing. What about Francie Bellew for Cross knocking out Mickey Linden's teeth playing for Mayobridge? Or Tadhg Kenneally targeting Nicholas Murphy with an elbow to the head in the first seconds of the 2009 All Ireland? Ciaran Duff kicking a Galway player in the head in 1983? The list is endless.

Personally I don't care if England are represented by the Limerick hurling team, and have connections to Ireland to that extent. Once they step out in that jersey, their flag is the butcher's apron. When they stand for God Save the Queen... They don't represent me on any level.

Should The Rebel Flag Be Banned At Cork Matches? - 5 Like(s)

Replying To sligo joe:  "This is not about getting offended on other peoples' behalf, it is about deciding what is or isn't appropriate. It should not be about waiting for those who are offended to express their hurt, surely we can all be offended by symbols of oppression, if we have to wait for oppressed people to have an effective voice we will indeed be waiting. If we know it's wrong, no need to wait."
'appropriate' Who decides on appropriate, Tracey Kennedy? Who else was consulted? Policy can't be decided on the hoof because of a recent racist killing in America. I'm not saying I'm against its banning but people are just being opportunistic. There are a lot of other flags flown at matches that may offend somebody. Many mentioned here. Yours is a bleeding heart post. Where do you stop? I was driving through Tullow in Carlow a few months ago. Suppose they ought to take down the 1798 pikeman statue, their are a lot of Protestant families in the area who had loyalist ancestry. Perhaps some of the big houses around the country should be levelled, they're symbols of landlord oppression.

World Cup Final Clashes With Club Semi Finals - 5 Like(s)
Former Kilkenny hurler from the 2000s decade here. Absolutely ridiculous having this match clash with the WC final, the biggest sporting event on earth. Unfortunately we still have narrow minded people in the organisation. This type of rubbish won't cut with younger people. It's really early 1900s ban mentality. People from both clubs would much prefer an earlier start and to be getting home in daylight. Realistically the match shouldn't be in Croke Park at all. It was usually the reserve of All Ireland Club finals. Dragging people from the South east up to Croke Park the Sunday before Christmas is just mind numbingly stupid.

Replying To brisbane:  "I think what the Mayo player did to poor Shane Walsh was much worse the that famous international rules hit on Graham Geraghty because Shane was unaware the Mayo guy was sneaking up behind him as the ball was the other end of the field. Then a couple minutes later the Mayo team attack the Galways players on route to the changing room this is disgraceful and if it was Dublin or Tyrone would be wall to wall coverage."
Would you give over the moaning. 'poor Shane Walsh'..is he a 5 year old child or something? Mayo attack Galway on route to the changing room. Maybe, I know this is a radical idea, if ye stood up for yourselves it might help with your football performances.

Football Is Finished - 4 Like(s)

Replying To tonguey:  "Yes I agree. Plus why do teams "tire" so much against Dublin?? Genuine question. Why or how can they be so much fitter?? All county teams especially at top level do the same training so why are they so much fitter then????"
Chasing down Dublin in possession is a lot of it. And they are not doing the same training over a long period. They have years of the highest quality training GAA money can buy in them. Look at the big Cavan men. They made no physical impression on Dublin. Dublin brushed by them. The genetic make up is the same around the country. The Dubs aren't polynesians. Obviously their conditioning is superior. Cavan would hold their own with most teams 15-20 years ago. Not now.

Rob Hennelly Transfers To Raheny - 4 Like(s)

Replying To RangersFan:  "link So Rob Hennelly is transferring to Raheny in Dublin. I wonder will we see the same outrage that surrounded Shane Walsh?"
One transfers to the biggest club in the country, and a team who lost an All Ireland in injury time. Almost guaranteed glory. The other to a mid ranked club, and has lived in Dublin 12 years. What do you think? Why would someone start a thread with such an obvious answer to the question they pose?

Replying To Onion Breath:  "Leix have never won anything without a string of Carlowmen on board (fact) so expecting to win with just two Carlowmen today left them with way too much to do."
Kilkenny man here. Presume you're talking about Graiguecullen. It's in Laois. Very disrespectful posting by yourself and your county man, CRAPS, towards Laois. They have 6 Leinster football titles and 3 Leinster hurling titles, 9 in total. Carlow have 1 football in 1944. I find Carlow think they have a great rivalry with Laois, but it doesn't stack up.

There's a certain set of people in Irish society who feel very sophisticated and enlightened. They like to tell us how to think and feel about England. We're immature and hate filled not to wish them well. It's time to rid ourselves of our 'inferiority complex's etc. BS. The gut says no. As a nation, not as individuals, because of their current and past establishment, and colonial exploitation, I don't want to see them winning something that would mean so much to them. Something that would be used as another jingoistic string to their bow.

Mayo V Tyrone All-Ireland Football Final - 4 Like(s)

Replying To Ronan1989:  "The All-Ireland is coming back to Ulster. Tyrone doggedness and lack of pressure (beating Kerry is already bonus territory) will see them over the line. Mayo already win their final a few weeks back and their mental weakness will show again."
Donegal begrudgery of Mayo is amazing. Have a little think about your own county's mental weaknesses over the last few years. Serial underachievers since 2012. Can't get to a final since 2014.

Boards Forum Restructuring - 4 Like(s)
I joined here late last year and find the forum messy to say the least. At the moment most are engaging in tit for tat parochial insulting, myself included. It's turned into a cyclical thing. Because one poster has gotten under my skin I've insulted Meath, Dublin, Cork and Waterford this week! I have absolutely nothing against any of these counties but we're all being sucked into nonsense. Proper moderation would sort this. There's very little enjoyment of mature discussion. Some ideas for change. 1. Allow instant messaging, no waiting for moderating first. It's caveman stuff waiting on posts to appear. Swear and offensive words can easily be filtered. 2. Carding and bans for those who stray wildly off topic, play the poster instead of replying to the post, insult, make no meaningful contribution, back seat moderate (example suggesting another poster is from another county and has multiple accounts) etc. This can easily be done retrospectively. 3. A report button that can be used to report a post. 4. Moderators to have their status displayed. The site has a reputation of excellent news articles but a forum where some who post frequently are mods but hide behind a username. 5. Anyone who uses the 'what have you won line as a put down gets a one week ban. There's a difference in when the point is used as part of analysis. For example if someone said Offaly hurling is at an all time low and received a reply well actually the 1980s and 1990s were an aberration, as the county hadn't a tradition of winning Leinsters before or after, fair enough. 5. Draw up a proper charter/set of rules posters sign up to initially. 6. Start every poster on a clean slate. Because as one poster pointed out on a thread this morning, the forum is like Junior Infants. The long slow process of releasing posts needs to go firstly.

Should The Rebel Flag Be Banned At Cork Matches? - 4 Like(s)

Replying To Trump2020:  "It's very dangerous when someone likes you tries to control the narrative. You would really do yourself a favor by actually learning something about that Flag and the Civil War itself instead of painting yourself into a very narrow box. At the height of slavery in the South only 2-3% owned slaves and I already pointed out that some of the Northern Generals did too so I'd say the vast majority of Southerners were not fighting for slavery that they didn't even participate in. Slavery was on its way out in the Western Hemisphere as seen in Brazil and other countries. Even without the Civil War slavery would have been eradicated in the USA. George Washington the First US President owned slaves and his picture is still on the US Dollar."
Just reading through the comments and agree with yours. Ken Burns 9 part 1990 series on the Civil War is excellent. With brilliant contributions on the Southern cause by Shelby Foote. We can be very subjective in how we treat history and individuals. Abraham Lincoln is the common man's anti racist hero. However he liberated coloured people in a very politically opportune way. He believed a black man wasn't the equal of a white man. He didn't offer universal suffrage to freed slaves. History is complexed, and pardon the reference, not a black and white issue. It's much more nuanced, looking at certain viewpoints from today's viewpoint is anachronistic. We like to think we, the Irish were/are a tolerant people. However in the 1840s and 1850s in New Orleans and across the US the Irish gangs fought black gangs for work and dwellings. They were seen as the lowest two ethnicities arriving in America. But when Irish gangs beat up black gangs a blind eye was turned..why, because they were white. None of this is right but it happened. Unfortunately Mitchell's views were held by many. And to the Lords in Westminster we Irish were depicted as apes in Punch and other publications. This was 1800s and other centuries thinking. 20 years ago working in a midlands town a work colleague, a lady, said to me the classic 'I'm not racist, but I'd never let a black doctor near me'!. I held my fire because she wasn't worth arguing with. But attitudes like that were commonplace up to recently. Where do I stand on the confederate flag at GAA matches? I honestly don't know. But until I had a group of coloured people say look we have a problem with this, I wouldn't be getting offended on their behalf. These decisions shouldn't be made unilaterally by busy bodies who lack the education to make such decisions.

When Your Team Is Out Who Do You Most Root For? - 4 Like(s)

Replying To brian:  "Football - being a Meath man, i'd respect the Dubs enough to wish them well. I'd also have a lot of time for Tyrone. In 97 they played a pitch opening close to my home. I asked for an autograph and one of the players (might've been Brian Dooher) took the program off me and got every player to sign it. A very classy gesture and earned my respect right there. Hurling. Mother is from Waterford so I've also been a Deise. I've always had a gra for the Cork hurlers too. Always a stylish bunch. I lived in Dublin in the mid 00's when they were going well and every sunday they played in Croker they used to come down the road I lived on pucking balls and lossening up. Was a sight to behold. When they played Waterford one year in croker I stuck a Deise flag out the window knowing they'd be coming passed. It didn't go unnoticed by them ;)"
The Cork hurlers puck around was 'a sight to behold'?!! Are you an American tourist?

Dubs V Mayo - 3 Like(s)

Replying To Rebel2020:  "Small s was a blatant red card . Shoulder to head is red card . Any defence of it is embarrassing. GAA want to wait until there's a broken neck before they act."
It's 2021 not 1951, where ploughing in to an open player who can't defend themselves is considered 'manly'. The impact of such collisions around the head is now known. Every sport has acted on dangerous play, particularly around the neck and head, intentional or not, except the GAA. They could also invest in some sort of oul tv screen and such incidents be called back. This sort of backwardness will have parents taking their children to other sports. Casey gets off for Limerick. If it was a Carlow or Wicklow player would they get off? Different rules.

Dubs V Mayo - 3 Like(s)

Replying To realdub:  "I agree that it wasn't deliberately dangerous but that type of tackle carries a risk that the intended target could move at the last moment and the accuracy will be off. It looked bad and he could have got the line from another ref. But that's how John plays. Every team has one. I hope the Mayo lad is OK."
It's not about John Small. It's about a backwards association with no rules for protecting its players from head and neck injuries.

GAA Before The Noughties Was Terrible - 3 Like(s)

Replying To StoreysTash:  "This is going to offend people of a certain age. Tallowman GAA on YouTube and TG4/Eir during Covid showing old matches have shone a light on many of the legendary hurling and football matches. So many of these legendary games from the 80's and 90's were absolutely awful. Yes they were exciting finishes and in terms of heart and passion the players could not be faulted, but they were awful in terms of quality. Player intelligence and skill were scarce commodities, there was about 2-3 top class hurlers on every team and beyond that there was honest endeavour but an attitude of pull, wind and swing and ask questions later. The real start of intelligent hurling came with the Cork team of the mid noughties, and in football with the Tyrone and Armagh teams. Before these teams came along, it was crash bang wallop. This is by no means to insult those who won provincial or All-Ireland medals back then, but in my view GAA now is in a far better place than it was back then and while there were pulsating finishes to matches back then (and Ciaran Carey's point v Clare is still the best hurling point ever scored), these great moments of class very much paper over otherwise mundane games."
Offaly 1994 to 1998 were an exceptionally skillful side 10 years before Cork. Young lad born 1998, my generation are great, tone to your post. We all thought like that when 24. Give you another 20 years and you might develop some nuance. Men were working hard in the fields with less mechanisation than today. No time for development squads or gym programmes. You need to learn a little about societal change.
