James Horan believes Mayo can make use of their enforced break this summer and recharge their batteries for 2019.

Having reached the last two All-Ireland SFC finals via the qualifier route, Stephen Rochford's side came up short in Round 3 this time round at the hands of Kildare and Horan says the players should now look to use the time to "recuperate fully" for next season.

"If you're working hard, or you're doing a lot of hours at work, you eventually need to take a break or re-charge or whatever," the former Mayo boss told Sky Sports GAA. "If you're on the whole time, the thing with football is it's very hard to take a break from it mentally or physically. It's the whole year round you're prepping, or you're trying whatever…

"To have an enforced break, you can make use of that. You can absolutely make use of that. There's a lot of players that play through injuries, they're minding injuries throughout the season, and then they're trying to rehab it before the start of next season.

"So I'm sure there's Mayo players with knocks and bangs and bits and pieces that can use the time as well to recuperate fully, so there's all those benefits. I mentioned the girlfriends, I'm sure families as well. That's very important that there's that integration of everything. So I think the time off will balance that, and bring that back to a strong level again."
