hi Seanorinn, Dermot Sheridan played well that day, he was usually half back but could have lined out somewhere else

Yeah Sean, think you're right. Didn't he push francie bellew?

Am I mixing my years up or did that game start with a brawl as both teams broke from the parade? Then a 2nd brawl just after throw-in (this is the one McKenna got sent off in)?

Bit of a trend with ourselves and Armagh (2014)? Seems to be a bit friendlier in Breffni!

Armagh broke early from the parade and man for man hit a Cavan Player - a row started and everyone was on edge. Bellew took a dig at mc kenna at the start of the game and Mc Kenna swung. He missed by about 2 foot but Bellew hit the ground. I think he got an Oscar nomination for his performance that day.

My memory was the *& game v Monaghan in breffni. Packed house and Monaghan as Div 1 champions dominated the first half. Our second half performance was brilliant. Unfortunately it ended in next round v Derry ( if I remember correctly)

Looking forward to the 29th to create new memories !!!

My mind is all over the place to be honest but no Dermot was not in the fray I should remember that chap for he was a very good player but left the panel after that if my mind serves me correctly. This was one of the very few times that substitutions worked very well. What makes it even worth talking about was we were 7 points down and two players down as well. I felt sorry for Micko to be honest for he would have been far better off to have either moved the two extra players right back out of the way for to be honest it's one of the very few times that he Micko was not able to utilise his player advantage or even know what to do with them.

Regarding Pierce McKennas sending off I can still see it I think that fella had blondy or peroxide blonde hair either way Pierce never touched him and he fell to the ground as if he was knocked out.

Francie Bellew as I recall

It was Francie Bellew that Pierce swung at. It happened withing two minutes of the throw in. A high ball was sent in and was going just left of the posts too high for anyone to get a touch on. Bellew pushed Mc Kenna in the air and Pierce swung at him and missed but the referee saw it and immediately sent him off. We fought very hard with 14 but just lost unluckily by a point.

I think it was more to the left but I will not question your post for you are right stating it was on the left. Do you know I watched that match and I had forgotten we had only 14 men for the majority of it and tells us how well Cavan played for sure. Be fair to say Pierce was one of our gentle joints as was Charlie Clarke who was not picked for that match, if my memory serves me right he was told that Thursday evening he was not on the panel for Sunday another fine player wasted as well, Charlie is or was a dairy farmer and found it very hard trying to get the time but we should have looked after him and we did not.

Lads. Long ball went into Pierson, bellew pushed him over the end line. McKenna ran in and tried to thump bellew, missed him pretty much but got red anyway. Francie lay down like a big girl which didn't help.

no mention of the Galway match in the park a few weeks ago or the smarting face of Kieran McGeeney a few weeks before that?

McGeeney did not deserve a mention but let's see how he is after the 29th

Not a famous victory but a great feat nevertheless.
Can anyone remember Charlie Gallagher scoring 3-10 against Down in a Mc Kenna Cup game in Kingscourt in the 60's ?

before my time in Cavan I arrived in 69. I have heard a lot about the mans ability and I was at his funeral in 2008. I spoke with the man many times but sadly never saw him play.

We were fierce unlucky not to win an Ulster title at least once between 83 and 89
There were a number of good performances
83 we went up and won in Derry - think it was by a point 2-13 to 2-12 in Ulster pre lim and then played Tyrone back in Breffni
Watched it from along the back wall on the hill we were a couple of points down with a few minutes left and Martin Lynch from Ramor scored a few amazing long range points and we pipped them ( a decent Tyrone team who won Ulster the year after )
Hammered Fermanagh in the semi in Clones with Derek Mc Donell running riot scoring a load
The 83 final got away from us -lost in the end by 3 pints in the end to Donegal
The hill was packed and sitting abroad now can still hear the atmosphere in Clones
Jim Reilly joe Dillon adage King all mighty on the day and really crafty forwards Ray cullivan Donal donohoe micky Faulkner Derek mc Donell paddy mc na mee
85
Some great league victories at home beating cork and Donegal
Remember going for the final league match to croke park against the dubs and having a real go but lost in end
87
Beating Monaghan in Breffni in first round
Sweltering dead heat full house and virtually point for point in a packed ground
Jim Reilly had a huge game
It was a cracking win
The semi in Omagh v Derry --we started like train and Stephen King scored a mighty long range goal early on
In the end ronan Carolanscored a trademark late free to snatch a draw
I'm sure the gate taking were robbed at the end !
The replay was incredible John Brady got a couple of goals but Derry stole it at the end when we looked set for extra time and won the final a few weeks later
Heartbreaking ! Same lads as mentioned before with John mc Hugh a great half back addition
88
First round in clones and Monaghan out for revenge
Fintan Cahill was the new young star
All points again but think it was something like 20 to 18 and we were pipped again
89
A great league and as mentioned before a great victory in league quarter final v Derry
Played dubs in semi and they beat us by a point
Everyone tipping us for Ulster but Donegal were on fire in Breffni and beat us four years in a row !
That 80 s squad were great value and produced some mighty performances without securing any titles
Thanks to them all for some great days

Sean. The great Charlie Gallagher died in '89 not 2008. I was told by a Derry man who knew him as I was out of the country for a while. Wonderful freetaker and was always top or near the top of the top scorers in the Sunday paper. We all followed the top scorers in those days. Charlie, Paddy Doherty and Tony Mc Teague. And many more too.
Still cant forget when he was taken off near the end of the Offaly semi-final in '69 and we missed a close in free that would have put us into the All Ireland final. Strange decisions indeed.

1976 I was just a young fella brought to the Ulster final by my Dad. We beat Down comfortably in the semi final and met Derry in the final.
It went to a replay and as I recall the replay went to extra time. I think the same happened in the Munster Championship between Kerry and Cork and the replay in it also went to extra time.Any way I remember being gutted and wondered would I ever see Cavan win Ulster.

Was there again in 1983 with no joy

Had to wait until '97 but was only able to watch from the Irish Centre in San Fancisco. So am still waiting to actually be there on the day. Hopefully will witness it shortly.

BreffniDub,

It was Mickey Greenan that missed that handy free against Offaly.
It took me years to forgive him.
