Replying To TheImmortal:  "To the best of my knowledge, those two Corkmen didn't plant any bombs on school buses or on English High Streets with families out shopping, how's that difference for starters?"
You probably never heard that in 1867 the Fenians bombed Clerkenwell prison in London, killing several people in a jail break that went wrong. This is just the start of many bombings in england carried out by republicans (before the 'Provisional' IRA ever existed). The english of course carried out many many bombings, shootings, burnings and murders in Ireland (and worldwide), the Irish people just didn't get up out of bed 1 morning and decide to attack england.

Roscommon GAA thread - 7 Like(s)
Roscommon were excellent today, played some really good football and it was exciting to watch compared to the sideways, backwards drivil armagh played, very disappointing to see attack minded players asked to play this way. Well done Roscommon management, great to see a county like yourselves playing so well, breath of fresh air.

Replying To mayotyroneman:  "unbelievable comments on this thread from apologists for the behaviour of the tyrone players to making fun of the whole thing..its not funny...aghaloo gaa club is the local gaa club in aughnacloy...aghaloo had to struggle through many years operating in a divided village right through the troubles...their pitch was and is right on the border..one of its members was assasinated by british soldiers in the eighties...since those dark days the community of aughnacloy has made a huge leap forward...that parade happens with the co-operation and completely respects mass goers on a saturday night...some members of the protestant community are active in aghaloo gaa club...imagine what they had to put up with this week with members of their own community telling them " i told you so"...so lets not make fun of what happened and lets not make apologies for the stupid actions of that bunch of young tyrone men...i hope they are ashamed of their actions and i hope they are ashamed of the damage they have done to Aghaloo GAA Club"
Nonsense in fairness. They can and should sing whatever they want in their own team bus, nobody should be browbeaten or put down for singing patriotic songs, those days are over. We are no longer 2nd class citizens expected to keep our heads down, keep your head held high and be proud of your country and it's history. The orange parade by its very nature is against the Catholic religion so to claim otherwise in just totally nonsensical.

The GAA And Taking The Knee. - 7 Like(s)
not a chance, if the GAA go down this route I for one will leave. This populist nonsense is none of our business, why is there no 'knee' for the palestinians, why was there no 'knee' for Irish catholics being discriminated against and massacred in our own country, where does it end!!? I will never support that fai soccer team again.

Replying To OpenStand:  "If we took the knee for black lives matters , then take the other knee for sexism , then lie on our backs for ageism. If we have energy left we then could play a match !"
Very well said. Shows how idiotic this nonsense is, this american marxist organisation and its claptrap has no place in our society or association.

Derry v Armagh - 2023 Ulster SFC Final - 6 Like(s)

Replying To DCFCGAA:  "Seems to be a lot of fuss over the tickets this year (got mine thankfully) Not enjoying this move it to croker talk. 35k between the 2 semis, surely clones can hold close to that if they open it up a bit. Lots of complaints about only club members getting tickets (im not a member of any ulster club, living in Clare) which I agree with. Dont like the 'jumping on the bandwagon' talk. Of course more people are going to want to go to a final and of course not everyone can go to every league match. All this " I was at a league match in the ppi**ing rain in the arse end of nowhere so where is my ticket" talk is nonsense, cant think of any other sports that reward people with ticket preference if they had gone to earlier games which untimely meant less . To all those going hope its a great day, weather not looking great but ah well, just glad Im coming in on the southern road as I can only imagine the traffic in the north side of the town. Derry by a fine margin, Gough will have to be on his game"
That's some elitist anti GAA attitude, you contribute nothing to any club in Ulster yet you get a ticket for the final but someone who plays and or volunteers all year misses out. You are the antithesis of the GAA. A disgrace.

Casement Park - 5 Like(s)

Replying To Breezy:  "2 questions for people here who know alot more than me about Ulster GAA. Even taking in the sectarian divide in Antrim why are attendances so low that people on here think 10k would be enough for such a big county ? Is it about lack of success ? What is the current state of Clones for use as Ulster's flagship stadium ? I've never been but it looks pretty shabby on TV and pictures"
Yes breezy, it is due to a mixture of a lack of success and under investment - up until recently the 6 counties was a unionist dominated statelet and they never invested in anything remotely Irish (indeed the british army occupied and destroyed casement park at one stage). I honestly now believe that if the stadium was built and money was injected into grassroots especially in Hurling that success would come for Antrim as they have the playing numbers and supporters, big games in Casement would attract big attendances. I love Clones but it is getting very rundown, the atmosphere and history around Clones was special but perhaps it is time to move on to Casement.

Replying To tommy k:  "The linesmen were like ostriches with their head in the sand and the ref wasn't much better sending off the 2 players that acted the most responsibly during the melee. I personally think they were afraid of the crowd of baying Armagh supporters in case they would get any hassle (or even worse) from the stands which is just completely wrong."
'Baying armagh supporters' - you should hang your head in shame with that comment

Replying To countyman2022:  "Because I am from Ireland and live under Irish rule. Not another countries. Love the GAA it sgreat."
That's why I asked, you believe that pre partition all people living on this island were british (as they were all under british rule), in your opinion the nationality of being Irish was only founded in 1921, it is a strange concept and one that is totally at odds with the GAA (and every historian) who believe that Irish people always existed on this island.

there you go, the kilcoo and ballybay management are doing it for charity, perhaps even paying the clubs to manage them. Great bunch of lads

can I ask a serious question, why are you a member of the GAA if you are a unionist? It is good to have non Irish people involved and I am just curious how you came to be interested in our games?

No Tricolour or National Anthem at GAA Matches - 3 Like(s)

Replying To arock:  "The national flag is, well the national flag!! What is the problem? If you have a problem with the flag you are hardly the type that is going to play GAA sports anyway, so removing the flag won't remove their prejudice or their problem. But similarly with the Union Jack that is the national flag in the six counties so I guess there is an argument for no national flags/anthems in the six counties but that is not a problem in the rest of the counties."
The butchers apron is not my national flag, nor is it the flag of anyone I know in the 6 counties and I'll fly my national flag with pride whenever I like if it's all the same to you.

GAA President - 3 Like(s)
Jarlath Burns would be a great President, a man steeped in the Irish language and culture who can be found out around his local club with his sleeves rolled up doing the ground work. He embodies all that is good about the GAA. As for the flag and anthem remarks, they are being misrepresented as Jarlath has already clarified. However, I do believe that Jarlath will be involved in outreach to unionists but not to the detriment or dilution of our values. There are those within Ulster who will be against him but that will mainly be petty parochial politics type of people of an sdlp ilk who will be against him just because of his family connections and history. As for Dublin, the anti-Dublin brigade on this site can be quite sickening, can people not just congratulate Dublin on an historic victory which has nothing to do with money and all to do with hard work, dedication and belief. Every gael should be proud of Dublin and aim to emulate them.

RIP Mr Hume - 2 Like(s)

Replying To Lockjaw:  "A great man who was well ahead of his time. He must have known that by reaching out to Gerry Adams and bringing Sinn Féin in, that his own party would suffer eventually. But he did it anyway in the interests of peace. If more politicians showed that level of integrity the country would be in a better place. I was watching a program the other night and it showed Bill Clinton giving a rousing speech in Derry. Clinton has his flaws but he fairly put his neck out for achieving peace in the North. The Brits were apoplectic with rage when he gave Gerry Adams a visa for example. But the gamble paid off and we have John Hume to thank for orchestrating a lot of it. I think the saddest thing was that due to his illness he had little if any recollection of the role he played. We can only hope that further progress can be made in the power sharing arrangement and that dialogue and compromise remain the tools for achieving aims rather than the bullet and the bomb. John Hume's legacy demands that of us. RIP."
Lockjaw, I normally agree with you 100% but the statement below is a bit revisionist to say the least 'A great man who was well ahead of his time. He must have known that by reaching out to Gerry Adams and bringing Sinn Féin in, that his own party would suffer eventually. But he did it anyway in the interests of peace. If more politicians showed that level of integrity the country would be in a better place.' He did NOT reach out to Gerry Adams, the republican movement and Sinn Fein were involved in 3 separate talks processes that Hume never even knew about. Gerry Adams and Fr Alec Reid then reached out to Seamus Mallon and the sdlp but they REJECTED the offer of talks, Gerry Adams and Fr Alec then reached out to Hume who responded positively. It was Sinn Fein and Adams who did the instigating not the other way around.
