Declan Hannon boards the train to Limerick with the Liam McCarthy Cup

Limerick arrived in Croke Park yesterday perfectly primed for battle and the Declan Hannon captained outfit ended 45 years of hurt. They dominate our hurling team of the week...

1. Nickie Quaid (Limerick)

As reliable as ever, Quaid's well-executed puck-out strategy put Galway on the back foot throughout.

2. Sean Finn (Limerick)

Limerick's full-back line laid the foundations for their success and Finn played his part in curbing Conor Whelan's influence.

3. Mike Casey (Limerick)

The aerial threat posed by Johnny Glynn was well flagged in advance but Casey negated that before injury brought his participation to a premature end.

4. Richie English (Limerick)

Conor Cooney got little change off the tenacious Doon man who was didn't put a foot wrong for the winners.

5. Diarmaid Byrnes (Limerick)

Came out on top in his personal duel with Cathal Mannion who was called ashore in the 45th minute.

6. Declan Hannon (Limerick)

Played a captain's part with two inspirational first-half points and proved to be the rock on which many a Galway attack perished.

7. Padraic Mannion (Galway)

Things didn't pan out the way that Mannion and his team-mates would have liked but that was through no fault of his.

8. David Burke (Galway)

The Tribesmen's captain kept plugging away and contributed three points to his team's final tally.

9. Cian Lynch (Limerick)

The Patrickswell dynamo worked tirelessly for the Treaty County's cause and used the possession that came his way well.

10. Joe Canning (Galway)

Mounted a one-man rescue mission in the second-half that almost came off before time ran out on the Tribesmen's two-in-a-row hopes.

11. Kyle Hayes (Limerick)

Produced a performance that belied his tender years and his four-point haul was a key factor in his selection as 'man-of-the-match'.

12. Tom Morrissey (Limerick)

Entered Limerick GAA folklore when dispossessing Gearoid McInerney and firing home his team's crucial second-half goal.

13. Joseph Cooney (Galway)

Was the only Galway forward that scored from play during the opening 35 minutes and finished the day with 0-3 to his name.

14. Seamus Flanagan (Limerick)

The Feohanagh Castlemahon clubman ran himself to a standstill and gave his all before being replaced in the 63rd minute.

15. Graeme Mulcahy (Limerick)

His perseverance was rewarded with a first-half goal and his stoppage time point was ultimately the difference between the teams at the final whistle.
