McGeeney rues Kildare 'lethargy'

August 11, 2008
Kildare manager Kieran McGeeney was in no doubt that his side's poor start cost them victory against Cork in the All-Ireland football quarter-final. It took the Lilywhites over 20 minutes to register their first score for the second week running, with the one key difference on this occasion being that they were already nine points in arrears. "We were very lethargic in the first 20 minutes," he admitted. "We were letting their defence come out with the ball. We were lethargic in other games, but if you are against a different class today, it's going to hurt you and it did." McGeeney, who reckoned that it had been "a fair year" for his team, was also left to rue the fact that his charges failed to make the most of their second half scoring chances, which included a missed penalty by Ronan Sweeney. "We probably should have had a couple of goals before the last goal chance before the end when one of the Cork players got a block on a shot by Dermot Earley. "We missed the first penalty and I don't know how you'd describe our performance in the first 20 minutes. I know from being out there how one little slip can created things (concession of scores) like that."
