Quirke, John

The Late John Quirke It was with great sadness that the people of Castlelyons learned of the death of John Quirke. This sad event came after an unexpected and brief illness. John came to Castlelyons Co-op to work more than twenty five years ago. In time he came to settle in Castlelyons by he always remained true of his origins at a Ballyduff and Waterford man. He worked in both the dairy and the yard until he became a driver collection milk from the farms in the parish and surrounding parishes. In this role he became very well known among the farming community, who appreciated not only his efficiency but also his courtesy and great sense of humour. Before settling in Castlelyons, he had a long and great career as hurler and footballer with Ballyduff. During the 1980s he played a very significant part in Ballyduff winning two senior hurling county titles and one intermediate football title. He also played in the blue and white of Waterford. Maurice Geary, Chairman of Ballyduff GAA Club, delivered an oration at the graveside which captured very accurately the John well all know. In 1993 he joined the Castlelyons club and played a big part in winning the East Cork junior 'A' championship. This was the beginning of a great decade for hurling in Castlelyons. John took great satisfaction in supporting the team in his adopted parish going on to win first a cunior 'A' county and following it a year later with the intermediate title. His untimely death is a great loss to Betty and James and everyone in the Castlelyons GAA Club and the parish sympathise deeply with them. Just about everyone will miss him.
