The late John Dennehy The friends were legion who learned with regret of the death which occurred after a long illness bravely borne at St Joseph's Hospital, Castletownbere of John Dennehy, Droum North, Castletownbere. For a long number of years, John and his wife Una, were 'mine hosts' in one of the town's leading public houses, The Beara Bar, giving faithful service to the local community. John was a very popular and true professional in every sense of the word. He was also employed by the Irish Lights Service as a Coast Tradesman, and as such worked in a number of lighthouses around the coast. In his 90s, he was a native of Garnish and as a young man was a noted footballer playing with his local club, Garnish and with the Beara senior team from 1937 to 1941. The respect in which John and his family are held locally was amply evidenced by the very large and representative concourse of sympathisers a the removal to the Church of the Scared Heart. Following Requiem Mass interment took place in Droum Cemetery where his friends and neighbours paid a final tribute to the memory of a friend. Sympathy is extended to his bereaved wife, Una, daughters, Margaret, Mary and Sheila, sons in law, grandchildren, sister, nephews, nieces and relatives. Courtesy of The Southern Star 13 April 2006
