Death of former Cork football captain

The death occurred yesterday (August 30) of Donal O'Sullivan, captain of the Cork team which lost the 1956 All-Ireland football final to Galway.
Aged 71, O'Sullivan was also prominent in GAA administration at county and provincial level. As chairman of the Cork county board in the period 1976-78, he presided over one of the most successful eras for hurling in the county.
His early football career included several seasons with UCC in the Sigerson Cup and with the Lees club in Cork he won a county senior football championship medal in 1955.
The following year, he led Cork to victory in the National League final as well as to success in the Munster Championship. O'Sullivan also played Railway Cup football for Munster.
The deceased became a member of the county board at just 21 and was elected vice-chairman in 1970. After serving three years as county chairman, he was elected chairman of the Munster Council in 1980.
