Ring, Donie

April 28, 2005
The Late Donie Ring There was widespread regret in the O'Donovan Rossa club with the news of the untimely death of Donie Ring. Donie died in St. Ann's Hospital, Skibbereen, after a brief illness. Donie had a great interest in GAA affairs, having worn the red and white of O'Donnovan Rossa with pride in his early years. He was a very valued club officer, a great supporter of all teams and was a prominent fundraiser for the club for many years. Donie was one of the founding members of the supporters club, which was formed 1992 to raise funds for the very memorable holiday to Gran Canaria for the team following O'Donovan Rossas historic All-Ireland win. He held the position of treasurer in the club in the nineties and stood down in the as treasurer at the AGM in 2001 after a five year stint. Donie was PRO for the club in the year 2003 and since then was a committee member right up to the time of his death. He was the local coordinator of the County Board GAA draw for many years. The next generation of Rings are involved with the club with Donie's grandson Daniel a member of the under 12 team. There was a huge turnout at the removal, funeral and burial. A large number of club officers and members formed a guard of honour on Friday and Saturday alongside other organisations. As a mark of respect, the club's representatives on the Cork football team, both Kevin O'Dwyer and Conor McCarthy, took to the pitch for their opening match in this year's league campaign against Kerry on Friday night in Pairc Ui Rinn wearing black armbands. On the local scene, all club activities for the weekend were cancelled as a mark of respect. To Donie's wife Kathleen, sons Don, Paul, David and Edmund, stepsons Jerry, John and Flor, sister Anna, brothers Paddy and Eamonn, grandchildren Daniel and Aisling, daughters-in-law June, Catherine and Carmel, and extended family the club extends its deepest sympathy.
