DATE OF BIRTH: 4/9/67
HEIGHT: 6'
WEIGHT: 12st 7lbs
CLUB: St Catherines
COUNTY: Cork
HONOURS: Minor, Under 21, Senior All-Irelands, 4 Fitzgibbon Cups (UCC)
INTER-COUNTY DEBUT: League - 1986 (November) versus Galway. Championship - 1989 versus Waterford
PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT: UCC
TOUGHEST OPPONENT: They are all tough. Pick one - Ciaran Barr (Antrim)
FAVOURITE GROUNDS: Thurles
FAVOURITE POSITION: Midfield/half back
SPORTING AMBITION: Success for my club (we need it at present)
DO YOU PLAY ANY OTHER SPORTS: Gaelic football, soccer (a little)
BOYHOOD HEROES: Jimmy Barry Murphy, Johnny Crowley
FAVOURITE PLAYER: Inter County - Tony O'Sullivan and Ger Cunningham. Club - (Clubmates) Christy Clancy and Denis Walsh (great attitude to the game)
BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON CAREER: Parents, and people like Dick Morrison and many more from my home club (e.g. Dan Hoare, County Treasurer)
WAYS OF IMPROVING THE GAME: More emphasis on coaching young players
BEST GAME SEEN: '86 All-Ireland from dugout (cork versus Galway)
PLAYERS WITH A PROMISING FUTURE: Cork - Tim Kelleher, Brian Corcoran, Ger Manley. Tipperary - Ger Maguire (minor last year, at UCC now)
HOPES FOR 1992: Being very optimistic
- Cork for All-Ireland
- St. Catherines for Cork Intermediate county
- UCC for Fitzgibbon Cup
YOU DO NOT HURL WITH ONE OF CORK'S MORE FASHIONABLE CLUBS. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR CLUB: Small club (intermediate since '84 - won junior county in '83). Two small villages - Ballynoe and Conna. Probably overshadowed by near neighbours Midleton. Despite limited success to date, we're optimistic for '92 under leadership of Mossie Carroll (trainer - ex-Limerick player), John G. Barry and Dick Hegarty
ARE THERE ANY OTHER ALL-IRELAND MEDAL HOLDERS IN YOUR CLUB? Denis Walsh (senior medals)
YOU COME FROM NEAR THE WATERFORD BORDER. ARE WATERFORD GAME EXTRA SPECIAL TO YOU? All inter county games are important for me at this stage. Being near Waterford means that you are constantly reminded of their victories over Cork
YOU THREW AWAY A BIG LEAD AGAINST TIPPERARY IN LAST YEAR'S MUNSTER FINAL AND CONCEDED A BIG SCORE. HAVE CORK A DEFENSIVE PROBLEM? I think it's more a matter of Tipperary having strong forwards
YOUR VIEWS ON FATHER O'BRIEN: Prefer not to comment - he'd probably think the same. But his record is EXCELLENT
CAN YOU TAKE TIPP NEXT SUMMER: Tipp are very strong and getting stronger. I'm surprised that they are not clear-cut favourites for the All-Ireland. But, it's hard to predict the outcome of Cork/Tipp games and if we meet them we will be optimistic. We have to worry about Kerry first and they're much stronger than people think
