Kelly, Kevin

July 30, 2004
The late Kevin Kelly Our beloved brother, Kevin, departed this life on Wednesday morning June 23rd 2004 and died in a peaceful and serene manner, synonymous with his lifestyle, in the presence of his loving wife, Eileen, daughters Kay, Bernadette, son Sean, Linda and members of his extended family. Kevin was a legend in his own right, loved life and lived it to the full until his illness which was definitely hastened by the untimely sudden death of his brother, Jimmy, last December as they were reared as twins, there being only 11 months in age between them. Kevin was a sports fanatic and in his boyhood years played hurling with Fr.O'Leary's Boys Club, Shandon Street, won 17 medals with Glen Rovers Underage Hurling team and played Football with the Cork Senior Football team. He was a pupil of North Monastery which would account for his love of the Camán. He played soccer with Evergreen and Albert Rovers and was a member of the latter team when they won the Intermediate Cup for the second year. During his twenty years in England, he enjoyed a chequered sporting career, playing Gaelic Football, Cricket, Table Tennis, Darts, Rings, Soccer and Golf which was his all-time favourite and with a handicap of 3, it was obvious that he had great potential and on his return to Cork in 1974 he continued to play golf and on many occasions played at East Cork Golf Club and all over the country. Kevin married his beloved Eileen (Murphy) from Greenmount Crescent, Cork, in St Mary's Church, Hornchurch in 1957 and his three children Kay, Sean and Bernadette were born there and on their return to Cork they lived in Eileen's homeplace in the heart of St Finbarr's Hurling Club, but Kevin remained a Glen Rovers supporter to the end. He had a passion for doing crosswords and quizzes and in his retiring years he wrote many Quiz Books which were launched at Murphy's Brewery and as an able Quizmaster he undertook Quizzes for Charitable Organisations and others all over the country, and was at his happiest in the Masters Seat. He had a keen interest in politics and canvassed for various candidates in North and South Central for the Fine Gael Party. He will be sadly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known the amiable Kevin, but mostly by his loving wife, Eileen, daughters Kay, Bernadette, son Sean, Linda, Neil, Jeff, grandchildren Sarah, Emma, Kate, Stephen, Louise, friends Mary, Seanie, us - his immediate family, sisters in law Martha, Peggy, brother in law Mick and a very large circle of kind friends too numerous to mention. The very large attendance of people from all walks of life at the Obsequies was testament to the esteem in which he was held everywhere. He has now joined his parents, Mother and Father in law, Timmy, Ned, sister Chrissie, brother Jimmy, neighbours and friends in their heavenly home. We feel quite sure that stories of happy times will be re-told, songs will be sung and a quiz will be held. The kind and caring doctors and staff at Cork Mercy Hospital worked tirelessly to lessen your pain and help you regain your strength, Kev, as they had done on numerous occasions, but it was not to be and we had to let you go. Heartfelt sympathy to Eileen and family and may God in His mercy console all of us who loved you. May your kindly and loving soul rest in peace. From his sisters May Peters, Kathleen Woulfe, Bridie O 'Halloran and brother John Joe Kelly. Courtesy of the Imokilly People July 2004
