The unexpected death of Roger O'Donnell, Lisadell, Ballyduff, was received with shock sorrow and an outpouring of grief. As the eldest member of a large family he was a father figure to them all, keeping them on the right road. He was a very well known personality throughout the area. Deeply involved with the GAA he played with the Garryspillane hurling team in his early years.

Although in mid years, he was also a member of Coshlea Historical Society and was well versed in local history. He was also involved in Ballyhoura Walking Club. Roger loved nature and was in his element when walking through the countryside visiting the historical sites and places of interest. Anyone who had the good fortune to meet him were impressed with his humble, kind and gentle manner and his readiness to enlighten them with his knowledge, nature's gentleman. He would often visit people in their homes in his research. Roger was a former member of Limerick Prison Service where he was very popular treating the inmates with dignity and respect. Members of the prison staff formed a guard of honour at his final departure.

His removal tool place from his residence to the Church of Assumption for Requiem Mass celebrated by his brother Fr. Jimmy assisted by his fellow priests. His remains were interred in the local cemetery. The huge attendance at his residence, requiem Mass and interment bore testament of his popularity and the O'Donnell and Slyne families. He is sadly mourned by his wife Peg, brothers Paddy, Billy, Michael, Tom, Ned, John, Fr. Jimmy, and Brian, sisters Joan and Mary B, nephews, nieces, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives, neighbours and friends. Ni Beidh aleithead ann aris.
