Buckley, Dan

May 31, 2012
Kilbrin is saddened by the passing last weekend of Dan Buckley in his 93rd year, the last remaining link with the founding fathers of Kilbrin GAA club.

The modern day club was formed at a meeting in 1953 hosted in Dan's shop in the village. He was elected club treasurer at that first meeting and he along with the late Dan O'Mahony were the main pillars in the administration of club affairs.

Club chairman Donie O'Mahony said older members will remember Dan with fondness. "In particular, he will be remembered for providing transport for players to all of the games in the 1950s and 60s when motor vehicles were not very plentiful. He was a great supporter of Cork hurling teams and ferried many locals to Munster Championship games in Limerick, Thurles and Cork," he said.

During 2001, Kilbrin GAA club acknowledged his significant contribution to the club over a number of decades by inducting him as the first member of the club's hall of fame.

"In 2003 Dan was honoured by a visit to his home by the then President of the GAA Sean Kelly," said Donie.

As Dan thanked Mr. Kelly for his visit the retort from the GAA president was: "Dan it is my privilege on behalf of the association to thank you and so many people like you for your contribution to making the GAA what it is in so many parishes throughout Ireland."

Condolences to his wife Tess and his family Denis, Seamus, Gerard, Teresa, Helen and their families. Ar dheis De go raibh a aimn dilis.
