McGrath, Stephen

May 07, 2011
There was widespread regret locally on the death of Stephen McGrath (Sunville, Ardpatrick) who died on Thursday last, March 31. Survived by sons Davie, Edmond, Pat, daughters Bridie Bradshaw, Mary McCarthy, sister Mary Barrett, sisters-in-law Lizzie McGrath, Kitty Moriarty, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, relatives and large circle of friends, to whom sincere sympathy is extended. Stephen was husband of the late Nora (nee Moloney) and was interred in Kilfinane Cemetery.
Blackrock GAA Club formed a guard of honour at the removal and funeral for the deceased who was current president of the club as well as being a former player, playing with Ardpatrick from 1935 to 1939 and with Kilfinane from 1940, at a time when they won South Limerick junior hurling championship titles in 1940 and 1944 and contested two county finals in those years. He was joined on the Killfinane team by his brothers Eddie and Paddy. Stephen went on to play with Kilmallock where he won South and county junior championship medals. With Ardpatrick and Kilfinane as well as Blackrock he was a club administrator and team selector over the years as well as being a loyal supporter up to his recent illness.
Stephen was well known and highly respected and this was borne out by the large crowds that attended to pay their respects at the removal, funeral Mass and burial.
