The Late William (Billy) Luddy

Mitchelstown Trout Anglers are mourning the death of their beloved vice president Billy Luddy who passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, July 19th. Billy died as he would wish without pain or suffering and possibly watching his favourite TV programme Going Fishing.

While not enjoying the best of health of late, he bravely continued to attend various functions and the card games, having won top prize the previous week in Angleboro with his playing partner Anthony. He was a very constructive officer of our club with knowledge, foresight and vision. He was very loyal and trustworthy, never one to shirk responsibility, expressed his opinions with the courage of his convictions. Billy never complained of ill health except for the lack of mobility and his dodge knees which he attributed to all the long range free kicks and football he played at his pivotal role at centre back for the Galtee Gaels and corner back on the Limerick county team. He was a true servant to his community, involved and committed to the well-being of the less well off in our society. One has to be impressed at the list of achievements and projects he pioneered so generously in time and effort as enumerated so eloquently by B. Rev Canon O'Leary's homily at the funeral Mass.

He was a founder member and first treasurer of Mitchelstown Credit Union. Together with his late wife. Maura he set up the St. Vincent de Paul shop which mushroomed under his stewardship to the thriving outlet it is today.

He was a volunteer driver for the day care bus. As a chairman of the sheltered housing project he ran the weekly fundraising card games and also organised social facilities for the old folks in the town hall.

As a collector for both the church and St. Vincents de Paul he was loyal and reliable, never abdicating his role for more pleasurable pursuits that may be offered on the day. The foregoing is just a sample of an impressive list of community projects he initiated and brought to fruition.

He was in every sense a true, modest and caring voluntary servant for all the community, never one to seek praise or publicity. It was only right and fitting that he got a grand farewell in a combined guard of honour from his colleagues in the Credit Union, Ozanam/SVP Centre, Trout Anglers, Galtee Gaels and Day Care Centre in Tearmann Uí Chaoimh.

The officers and members of Mitchelstown Trout Anglers express sincere condolences to all the Luddy family, his son Tim, daughters Anna-Marie and Emma, brothers Paddy and Timothy, daughter-in-law Meg, sons-in-law Peter and Derek, grandchildren and all his nieces and nephews.

We bid a final farewell to our colleague and piscatorial pal.

"When the bugle sounds the last parade, and the light grows dim in the eyes, make sure you say at the pearly gates you've come for the evening "Rise".
