December 23, 2009The father of well known Cork hurler Cathal Naughton died suddenly on Sunday when he was just about to remove bunting from the local GAA hall with friends.
Dermot Naughton (51) was with friends, Jim Coughlan, Tom O'Brien and Matt Ryan in the local club on Sunday when Mr Naughton 'without warning or a murmur' collapsed suddenly.
"They were about to remove the bunting and were chatting when suddenly and mid-sentence Dermot just collapsed. There wasn't a warning or a murmur," said Mike Morrissey of Newtownshandrum GAA.
Newtownshandrum GAA club has a defibrillator but efforts to resuscitate Mr Naughton did not work.
Mr Morrissey heaped praise on Mr Naughton who he said was "always at hand to help out at the club in any way he could."
"Dermot was a truly outstanding club member, and he too was a star player in his own right. He won minor, under 21 and intermediate titles," said Mr Morrissey.
He said in 1984 Mr Naughton hung up his boots, but he turned his attention to his local GAA Club.
"No matter what you asked Dermot to do, he would do it. If he didn't have the time to do it that day he would say 'not today, but it will be done tomorrow', and he was true to his word. The club will miss him greatly," said Mr Morrissey.
Dermot Naughton is survived by wife Josephine, sons Shane, Diarmuid and Cathal. Removal was from O'Malley's Funeral Home, Charleville to St. Joseph's Church, Newtown. Requiem mass and funeral afterwards to new cemetery, Newtown.
