Sigerson Cup: DCU lift crown
February 28, 2010
DCU lived up to their favourites' billing when they claimed only their second ever Sigerson Cup at UCC's expense in Leixlip, Co. Kildare yesterday.
DCU 1-11
UCC 0-10
Niall Moyna's star-studded side, who won the O'Byrne Cup last weekend, always looked the most likely winners on a perfect day for football. With Dublin's Paddy Andrews to the fore, they led by 0-6 to 0-3 at half-time and extended their lead on the restart when man of the match Brian Sheridan pointed a free.
After Roscommon's Cathal Cregg missed a great goal chance for the Glasnevin when he blasted over the bar, the same player redeemed himself by setting up full forward Sheridan for the only goal 11 minutes into the half.
UCC, who have now gone 15 years without winning the Sigerson Cup, responded with three unanswered points in the next five minutes per Aidan Walsh and Seamus Hayes to leave just a goal between the sides.
But they couldn't get any closer as late points from Sheridan (from a penalty) and semi-final hero David Kelly sealed DCU's win.
