Munster club IHC final: South Liberties grab glory

November 23, 2009
Limerick city side South Liberties produced a tremendous finish to edge out Cork champions Douglas in a thrilling Munster club IHC final at Mallow yesterday. South Liberties..2-10 Douglas.1-12 Such an outcome appeared highly unlikely at half-time when South Liberties trailed by 0-5 to 0-7, despite having played with a gale to their backs in the opening half. But they were still in the game, trailing by 0-7 to 0-10, when the game exploded into life in the final 11 minutes. Shane Garry's long clearance set up Davy O'Neill for the equalising goal for South Liberties before Mark Harrington fired a penalty over the bar at the opposite end to restore Douglas' lead. The Limerick champions fought back to restore parity at 1-9 to 0-12 before Brian Slattery put them in front with time running out. Moments later, the same player forced home a second goal to put four points between the teams and while Mark Collins hit back immediately with a similar score for Douglas, South Liberties held on for a dramatic win.
