The Late Dan Coughlan Dan Coughlan left Main Street, Ballydehob, to go to Farrnderris as a young student almost 80 years ago an though he never forgot his roots it was in Cork city and especially with the Glen Rovers GAA Club and Cork hurling that he made an indelible contribution. Dan, who had celebrated his 90th birthday on New Year's Day passed away peacefully at home in Ballydehob in Sunday May 3, after being in failing health in recent months. Coming from a great GAA family he was an outstanding hurler and, as was quite normal for the time, was recruited by Glen Rovers while still in secondary school. He went on to win an All-Ireland minor medal as a wing back with Cork in 1937. Two years later he won the first of his three County Senior Hurling medals with the Glen with a team captained by Jack Lynch which included Cork and Glen legends like Paddy O'Donovan, Paddy 'Fox' Collins, Jim Young, Din Joe, Connie and Jack Buckley. When his playing days were over he joined the backroom team of the Glen and Cork. He trained a UCC team that won the Fitzgibbon Cup in the 1950s and was the Glen representative on the selection panel of the Cork team that won the All-Ireland Senior Hurling title after a lapse of 12 years in 1966. At his Requiem Mass in St. Brigid's Church on Wednesday representatives of his beloved Glen formed a guard of honour. Later he was buried in Schull Cemetery. Dan, who was predeceased by his wife, Mary (nee O'Regan East End) and by his sister Mary, Kathleen, John, Frank, Pat and joe, is mourned by his son Matt, daughters Helen, Anne and Mary, brother Finbarr, sister Helen, relatives and friends in Ballydehob and Cork.
