Murphy, Patrick

June 13, 2009
The people of Bere Island and every gael in Beara and further afield who knew Patrick Murphy were shocked on hearing of his sudden death on Thursday last. The deceased was a native of Rerrin Village and belonged to a great footballing family who gave great service to the Bere Island club. His father Brendan, uncles Weeshie, Fr Bob and Fr. Con all played for the island, Beara and Cork. Patrick was in his prime in the 1990s and played with Bere Island, Beara and UCC, before injury forced him to retire prematurely. His interest in the game never dimmed, however, and he remained a staunch supporter of the Gaelic game locally and at county level. He served his club as chairman, selector and representative at county committee meetings, minor and senior. The removal to St. Michael's Church, Bere Island, was last Friday evening with the funeral on Saturday. The coffin was draped in the Bere Island club colours, maroon and white, and the official and players formed a guard of honour from the funeral home to the pier in Castletownbere and again to the church door on arrival on the island. Son of the late Brendan and Kitty, the deceased who was aged 48 is survived by his wife Carol, daughter Katie, son David, brothers Ned and Brendan, sisters Sara, Nora, Kitty and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and many other relatives to whom smypathy is extended.
