O'Ceallaigh, Conchubhar

A huge crowd attended the funeral in Baile Bhéuirne last weekend of Conchubhar O Ceallaigh, a farmer and community activist who died after a recent illness. Conchubhar O Ceallaigh, also known as Connie Kelly, eas brought up o n the family farm in Gort na Tiobratan, of which he made a field available in recent years for the Baile Bhuirne-Cuil Aodha Show. Connie was a former player with Cumann Peile Naomh Aban and members of the Baile Bhuirne club formed a guard of honour outside the local church after the funeral mass on Sunday afternoon. The church was full to capacity, and the guard of honour outside included county footballer Anthony Lynch, who had given a man-of-the-match performance against Kerry the previous evening. Also among the mourners was Cork star player Pearse O'Neill, who is a nephew of Connie's wife, Frankie. Conchubhar O Ceallaigh was a long time member of Meitheal Mhuscrai and a local activist with the Baile Bhuirne branch of Conradh na Gaelainne, the Gaelic League. President of the Gaelic League, Padraig Mac Fheargusa issued a statement of sympathy in memory of the native Irish speaker.
