Munster MHC: Tipp demolish Cork in replay
July 02, 2009
Tipperary 2-21
Cork 1-12
Tipperary will face Waterford in the ESB Munster MHC final on Sunday week following an emphatic semi-final replay victory over Cork at Thurles last night.
After last week's extra-time thriller, which saw the sides finish level on 5-17 apiece, another close contest was expected, but from the throw-in when John O'Dwyer opened the scoring with a point, Tipp stamped their authority on proceedings and had their place in the final secured long before the final whistle.
O'Dwyer was Tipp's scorer-in-chief with 0-11, 0-8 of which came from placed balls, as Cork's reign as provincial champions came to a sudden end. O'Dwyer had also tormented the Rebels in the drawn encounter by hitting 2-7.
The Killenaule youngster scored five points in the opening 10 minutes to help Tipp to a 0-6 to 0-1 lead, and although Cork improved after that, a David Collins goal gave the home side a six-point buffer, 1-11 to 0-8, at half-time.
An Eoin O'Sullivan goal six minutes after the resumption brought Cork to within four points, but that was as close as they came as Tipp immediately hit back with a similar score from substitute David Butler to ensure their place in the decider.
