O'Donovan Rossa GAA Notes
June 25, 2009
The O'Donovan Rossa senior footballers preserved their senior
football status for next season after they held their nerve in
dramatic fashion to emerge victorious by two points over Ilen Rovers,
on a 2-6 to 0-10 scoreline, after a tense relegation play-off
encounter played last Sunday, in Castlehaven.
Skibb were fortunate to hold a slender two point lead at the interval
having failed to play to their undobuted full potential with
goalkeeper Damien Long producing an inspired performance between the
posts. Rob McCarthy maintained his composure to billow the net with a
close range drive before a long range drive from inter county ace
Conor McCarthy landed in the net. Skibb started the second half
sluggishly allowing Ilen to regain the initiative and hold a one
point lead entering the final quarter.
Skibb benefitted enormously from the introduction of fresh legs in a
tension filled finale to stage a heroic comeback. Conor McCarthy
levelled proceedings from a free before precocious young talent
Thomas Hegarty nonchalantly struck a peach of a point from long range
before Donie "g Hodnett sealed a crucial victory with the insurance
point deep into injury time.
