Patrick Bohane - an appreciation

The Drishane and Tragumna neighbourhood has recently lost one of its kindest and most respected inhabitants with the death of Patrick Bohane.

Patrick was everyone's friend, but to me and my family, all our life, he was one of our dearest neighbours. Unassuming, quiet spoken, calm, sincere and honest are some of the qualities he had in abundance, and that earned him the respect and good standing he had in the area, like his parents before him and his late brother John.
Outside of my home he was a father figure to me all my life and, as a result, we were very close in all matters, be it farming, sport, social outings etc. We may have had different political views but we agreed and enjoyed to differ and in no way did it interfere in our happy neighbourly friendship.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s he was a clean and impressive football player with Castlehaven, who was never noted by a referee. Patrick subsequently in later years saw his son Martin play with Skibbereen, and at times against Castlehaven. He was highly regarded by both clubs and it was indeed fitting and appropriate to see Castlehaven club with some of his old team mates giving him a guard of honour in Skibbereen on his last journey. He was also a regular member of the Lake Cross tug of war team that started almost forty years ago.

We miss him locally, but how much more will he be missed by his widow Anne, son Martin and daughter Fionnuala and family, brothers DD and Peadar. We again sympathise with them in their loss. But they can console themselves in having a model husband, father, grandfather and brother, gone to his creator and eternal reward. He lived peacefully, he died peacefully and it is my wish he is now enjoying the peace of heaven.
