Foley, Fr Denis

September 18, 2008
The death took place recently of Fermoy native, Fr Denis Foley, Kimmage Manor, Dublin. The late Fr Foley, who was perhaps better known locally as Donagh, was a member of the Foley family which, until quite recently, ran a very successful footwear shop in Patrick St, Fermoy. He was predeceased by his brother Aloysius (Al) a few years ago. Before he joined the priesthood, the late Donagh was a very prominent sportsman in local circles- as a footballer he helped Fermoy to win two North Cork minor football c/ships in 1938 and 1939, when playing at corner back and at full back respectively. In 1940, he was a member of the Fermoy Junior team which was beaten in the North Cork final by Mitchelstown. Fermoy returned to the senior ranks in 1941 but as Fr Donagh had left to study for the priesthood by then, they were without his very promising talent. The late Fr Foley was to spend many years ministering in the mission fields of Nigeria before returning to Ireland and Dublin some years ago. Unwell for a time, he died peacefully at Our Lady's Hospice, Harold's Cross, Dublin. Fr Donagh is survived locally by his sisters Kathleen (Bowdren) and Nelly (Slattery). He is deeply regretted by his sisters, sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, his fellow priests and friends. His funeral was held in the church of the Holy Spirit, Kimmage Manor, Dublin, where, following Requiem Mass of the Resurrection, he was buried in Dardistown Cemetery. Mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul in St Patrick's Church Fermoy at 7.30pm this Thursday evening. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis. The Corkman 18/09/08
