Morgan backs returnees to lift Rebels

Former Cork great - Billy Morgan

Former two-time All-Ireland winning manager Billy Morgan says he's hopeful that Cork can compete with the best teams in the country this summer.

The Rebels had been favourites for promotion from Division 2 at the start of this year's Allianz Football League campaign but four defeats in seven games saw Ronan McCarthy's men just about avoiding relegation instead.

Morgan feels that with the return of a few key players the Rebels could enjoy an extensive run in the championship.

"I think what people don't realise is that Cork were missing a lot of players for the league campaign," he told GAA.ie

"They were missing the Nemo contingent and I think four of them would be possibly on the team. You had Sean Powter, James Loughrey, Aidan Walsh all out through injury and in the last couple of games Sean White, who is coming through and he will be a very good player, and Ruairi Deane were also missing.

"That is nine players, a big take out of any team. If everybody is fit I would hope that come the championship that Cork can compete with anybody."
