With a Christmas general election looming, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin was in Pairc Ui Rinn yesterday to support (and canvass for votes perhaps) Nemo Rangers in their quest to win a record 16th Munster club SFC title.

Micheál's son Micheál A Martin was between the posts for the Cork champions who produced a dominant performance to strip Dr Crokes of their Munster and All-Ireland crowns.

Afterwards, the opposition leader joined the Nemo supporters on the pitch to congratulate their heroes, including county star Paul Kerrigan. Martin will resume talks today with An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in a last-ditch attempt to break the impasse between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil over the position of An Tanaiste Frances Fitzgerald, which is threatening to trigger a snap election.
