The Late Tom Malone The death took place of wellknown Clare GAA president, Tom Malone. In his 93rd year, the Miltown Malbay man died unexpectedly at his home at Main Street. He will be buried on Friday at Ballard Cemetery. A founder member of Clonbony GAA club in 1936, he remained a driving force with the dual club up to the time of his death. From the time the club was founded, the late Mr Malone attended every GAA convention in Clare. One of his proudest days came when he was elected president of Clare GAA three years ago, succeeding his great friend, the late John O'Gorman. In an interview with The Clare Champion in 2007 ahead of Clonbony GAA' s 70th anniversary function, Tom recalled an occasion in 1941 when, together with Marty Talty and Thady Flanagan, he cycled to a Munster Council meeting in Tipperary Town to speak on an appeal by Clonbony against a decision take by Clare GAA not to accept the club's registration because of an objection by the Miltown club. Over the years, Tom' s pub in Miltown was a meeting place for various sports groups that Tom was involved with such as Clonbony GAA, Clonbony Athletic Club, the Clonbony and Clare Ladies' Football Board, the West Clare hurling board and the Clonbony Pipe Band. He was always very proud of the part he played in bringing the Ras Tailteann to Clare for the first time. He always dreamt about seeing a Clare team compete in the Ras and he was clearly a very proud man when this came about. He is survived by his sons Fintan and Sean and his daughters Marian and Kathleen. Sean is continuing the family involvement with Clonbony and he is the current club secretary. Tom's remains were at O'Friel's Funeral Home in Miltown on the Thursday evening before being removed to Miltown Church for his funeralmass on the Friday and the burial took place at Ballard Cemetery.
