Clare hurling legend Ollie Baker has joined the Westmeath senior hurling backroom team as a selector.
The Athlone-based garda has agreed to assist the midlanders who are anxious to build on this year's achievement of becoming the first winners of the Christy Ring Cup. A two-time All-Ireland winner with the Banner County in 1995 and '97, Baker joins John Donoghue and Liam Davitt on manager Seamus Qualter's backroom team for the coming season.
Qualter explained: "I have Ollie Baker coming in now as a selector and a coach. He's a friend of mine here in Athlone. Ollie has great experience and he'll have a lot to bring to us."
Qualter revealed that current Banner County team trainer and former Galway United soccer star Johnny Glynn is also lending his expertise.
"I'm in contact with Johnny Glynn and he's giving us a hand at the moment drawing up training programmes."
Westmeath have been drawn against Dublin in next year's Leinster championship quarter-final and if they win that, they will face provincial champions Kilkenny in the semi-final.
