Donoghue, Mike

The Late Mike Donoghue MIKE Donoghue was a remarkable man, a doyen amongst calf dealers, he was known from Bandon to Castlebar and from Baltinglass to Mullingar. It was at the Mart in Portumna that I first met Mike, long before I moved to Broadford, he became a very good friend to me ever since. When I first came to Broadford in 1973, the only person I knew was Mike Donoghue. From then on our friendship grew. Mike was a calf dealer extraordinaire, a way of life that is sadly dying out in rural Ireland. In the course of his life he travelled roads, back roads and boreens gaining respect and friends where ever he went. He knew what suited every customer and in his jovial manner took it all in good heart if the deal did not work out. Mike had a great hobby, that was GAA. Whether it be Broadford, Clare or the rest of Ireland he was always a true GAA follower. He loved to see Broadford teams hurling, reminding him of the days he wore the Broadford jersey himself. For a man who attended so many All-Ireland Finals it is a fitting tribute to be buried on a day this years All-Ireland Final was played. Courtesy of hte Clare Champion, November, 2004
