One of Clare hurling's most famous sons, Jamesie O'Connor, has announced his retirement from the inter-county scene. Aged 32, O'Connor was a key figure in the team that won two All-Irelands in 1995 and '97, scoring the winning point in the latter final against Tipperary. His decision to quit was expected as he had been troubled by injury in recent years which meant that he was't able to consistently reproduce the high-octane performances of his peak years. A highly skilled and quick player, O'Connor played championship hurling for 12 years, mainly at wing forward. As well as winning two All-Irelands, he also garnered three Munster medals, four All-Star awards, an All-Ireland club medal with St. Joseph's Doora-Barefield and was selected as Hurler of the Year in 1997. His contribution to Clare was enormous over the years and even this season, he played a crucial role after coming on as a sub in the drawn All-Ireland quarter-final against Kilkenny by scoring the equalizing point. He will continue to play with St. Joseph's next year and will also be involved with the Clare minors. Tweet
