The Late Paddy McSherry Paddy McSherry, Ennis Road, Newmarket-on-Fergus whose death took place was a well known and popular character. Aged 64 years, he worked in Shannon Airport for many years where he was employed by Aer Rianta in the Duty Free Stores. His death took place in the Regional Hospital, Limerick on September 3 where he had been a patient for four months. Born in Newmarket-on Fergus, he was son of the late John McSherry who came from Clarecastle and the late Anna McSherry who was a native of Newmarket-on-Fergus. He lived most of his early life in Ennis where he was educated at the Christian Brothers Schools. Coming from the home of the famous Blues hurlers, he took an interest in GAA activities and played with the Ennis school team. He was a great supporter of the the Clare teams and also travelled to Harty Cup colleges games when Ennis CBS were involved. Also while living in Ennis, he became a member of the the O' Connell Club off O' Connell Street and as an officer played a prominent part in the running of the club. After 30 years in Ennis, he returned to Newmarketon-Fergus, where he lived with his wife, the former Betty O' Neill and daughter, Anne. He was also a well known and colourful member of the staff of the Duty Free Stores at Shannon . He had retired from there five years ago.Noted for his wit and banter, Paddy had many friends who enjoyed his company, especially on social occasions and over a pint in O' Neill's. He also enjoyed a midway stop in Clarecastle to talk GAA with the arch rivals of Newmarket-on Fergus on the hurling field In his tribute to Paddy at the funeral mass, Fr. Brendan Quinlivan referred to Paddy's popularity and the way many an occasion was enlivened by his presence. Paddy's remains were removed from Kennedy's funeral home, Ennis to Newmarket-on-Fergus church on September 5 and they were received by Fr John Oakley.Fr. Brendan Quinlivan was chief celebrant of the funeral mass on the following day with Canon Reuben Butler, P.P., Fr. Lynch, Fr. Oakley, Fr. Tom Ryan, Shannon and Fr. Brendan Moloney, President, St. Flannan's College. The funeral took place afterwards to Kilnasoolagh cemetery, Newmarket-on Fergus. Paddy is survived by his wife, Betty, daughter, Ann, mother-in-law, Anna O'Neill, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, relatives and friends. Courtesy of The Clare Champion September 2002
