HS Hurling Team of the Week

The hoganstand.com hurling team of the week
Players from Clare, Laois, Cork, Antrim, Carlow and London are represented on our Team of the Week.

1. Anthony Nash (Cork)

A bad day for Cork in Limerick, but their All Star goalkeeper couldn't be blamed after keeping another clean sheet. The Rebels' margin of defeat would have been greater but for a brilliant point-blank save from Nash to deny Clare substitute Pete Duggan in extra-time.

2. Brian Campion (Laois)

The former captain was very impressive at full back as Laois avenged last month's defeat to Westmeath with a big win in the Division 2A final.

3. David McInerney (Clare)

The Banner may have conceded 2-23 against Cork, but McInerney and his full back colleagues Domhnall O'Donovan and Seanda Morey got better as the game wore on.

4. Seanda Morey (Clare)

The young Sixmilebridge clubman enhanced his growing reputation with another impressive display which saw his direct opponent Stephen Moylan replaced after an hour.

5. Matthew Whelan (Laois)

Laois only conceded one point from play against Westmeath and Whelan - who scored two frees - was outstanding at the heart of their defence.

6. Pat Donnellan (Clare)

The centre back and captain was magnificent in the Banner's relegation playoff victory over Cork.

7. Paul Shiels (Antrim)

The Dunloy stalwart turned in a man of the match performance as Antrim beat Carlow to preserve their Division 1B status.

8. Colm Galvin (Clare)

Another of last year's All-Ireland U21 winners, Galvin contributed an endless supply of ball to the Clare attack and also chipped in with three points of his own.

9. Tony Kelly (Clare)

The youngster showed his star quality by scoring six points from play against Cork. After starting the game at centre forward, he switched to midfield for the second half and was arguably the best player of view.

10. Colin Ryan (Clare)

Despite contributing to Clare's massive wides count (22), the Newmarket-on-Fergus man racked up 0-10 (0-6 from frees) in another high-scoring display.

11. Shane Kavanagh (Carlow)

On a day when Carlow's leading marksman Marty Kavanagh was unable to play due to glandular fever, his namesake Shane played superbly at centre forward. However, his tally of 0-6 (0-1 from play) wasn't enough to keep them in Division 1B.

12. Pa Cronin (Cork)

The captain has been Cork's best player in the league. His 68th minute goal - which followed a fine catch on the edge of the square - put the Rebels two points up, but they couldn't hold on as Clare fought back to force extra-time.

13. Ger Hennelly (London)

The Galway native fired 1-7 (0-5 from frees) as the Exiles withstood a late Meath rally to claim the Division 2B title at Newbridge.

14. Neil McManus (Antrim)

McManus' accurate free-taking has been one of the features of the league, and yesterday he slotted 0-9 to condemn Carlow to relegation.

15. John Brophy (Laois)

Laois came to O'Connor Park expecting another close battle with Westmeath, but a brace of Brophy goals inside the opening quarter meant the Division 2A final was never a contest.
