The Late Noel Davis

The sudden death of Noel Davis, former managing director of Roche Ireland ( formerly Syntex) on Sunday last has caused widespread shock.

A native of Thomondgate in Limerick, he resided at Boomfield, Ballyalla, Ennis.

Noel became the first employee of Syntex Ireland in 1974 and as personnel manger he recruited the workforce for the plant, which became operational in 1976.

He was appointed the company's managing director in 1982 and in 1989, he was promoted to the role of vice president of corporate affairs for Syntex worldwide. He retired from Syntex in 1995.

Noel was involved with ClareCare and was a former member of the board of the Mid-Western Health Board.

A keen sports fan, Noel played Harty Cup hurling with Limerick CBS in 1958 when they lost to St Flannan's in the final and also played at midfield with the college footballers when the won the Corn Ui Mhuiri title in 1960.

He regularly attended colleges games and was particularly proud when his grandson, Stephen O'Halloran lined out for St Flannan's in recent years.

He was well known in golfing circles and was a prominent member of Wings Golfing Society that raised money for local charities. He was a member of both Ennis and Lahinch clubs and played off single figures.

He was also a keen Munster rugby follower and regularly attended games at Thomond Park.

He is survived by his wife, Mary daughters, Tracey, Nicola and Gillian; sons-in-law Fergus Tuohy, Ray O'Sullivan and Mark Dunphy.

He was buried in Drumcliffe on Wednesday after his funeral mass at Ennis Cathedral.
