February 28, 2009
The late Kieran Whelan The sudden death of well-known Clonlara GAA official, Kieran Whelan on Monday has caused widespread shock in his native parish and throughout Clare GAA. A member of the selection committee that guided the South-East Clare club to unprecedented success over the past two years, Kieran had served his club at all levels over many years. He played at all grades for Clonlara and when his playing days ended, he turned his attention to working as an officer for the club and amongst the positions he filled was that of chairman. He held many team management positions over the years and helped to steer the club to a variety of underage successes. When Jim Gully was appointed manager three years ago, he named Whelan as a member of his selection committee and together with Niall Hogan, they steered the club to the county and Munster intermediate titles in 2007 and to the senior championship and Clare champion cups in 2008. He was also a selector when, Clonlara won the county intermediate title in 1989. His funeral mass takes place on Thursday. - courtesy of The Clare Champion, February 2009
