Cavan v Armagh SFC

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

With the dust now settling on our league and U21 campaigns , focus now turns to the championship . I think we have a decent shot at Armagh . While Armagh will be a real step up for us we have to start performing at this level as that is the true measure of improvement . Hoping for a real cracker of a game and to push them all the way . If Armagh play below par then we should be looking to beat them in front of a home crowd .

Here's the starting team I'd like to see:

G.K Reilly/O'Mara - toss of a coin for me who plays here
Killian Clarke Rory Dunne Jason McLoughlin
Fergal Flanagan Alan Clarke Damien O'Reilly
Mossy Corr David Givney
Gearoid McKiernan Mark McKeever Barry Reilly
Cian Mackey Eugene Keating Jack Brady

Maybe some of the U21s might spring a surprise but although there's real quality there I think it's a year too early for some . I can't see defence or midfield differing too much from my selection but think he will go with a different set of forwards .

yep...we can debate the make up here or there...but whats clear to me is the half back line's not good enough....not sure what we can do here if anything

DD10, drop back McKeever and McCutcheon? Toastie has been solid so no issue there.

Sorry hardtimes and no offence ment too the lad , but Flanagan is one off those players who needs another year or 2 minimum !

I agree he can improve cavanman but I haven't seen anyone better play in this position all year bar Rory Dunne but I'd rather see him in full back line . We've tried a number of players here but power and drive have been a problem and we've coughed up a fair bit of possession here . I think him or Hayes but give him the nudge . Who would you put here?

I wouldent disagree a whole lot with that selection and I reckon it will be close to the call. Might opt , purely on power and experience , for John McCutcheon at wing back instead of Feargal but it is a toss of a coin really. Would definately go for Alan in the goals. Ronan Flanagan will also go close as a link man.
Like the idea of playing Gearoid as a wing forward and winning a lot of kickouts up that wing. Mossy will probably get in on workrate. Givney hopefully will blossom this year in the championship and could be a real star!!
I would be inclined to play Martin Dunne and also Martin Reilly has had a very good league and could get centre forward. Keating will have to get his act together and play for the team or else!!! Niall Smith, Kevin Tierney, Niall McDermott are other options?

Of the u21's who are a very talented group I doubt any more will start other than the lads mentioned. Really impressed with Gerard Smith and Mc Vitty but both a bit lithe and will have to wait a year or two. Lots of others who could sneak into the subs like Paul OConnor, Enda Reilly, Turlough Mooney, Chris Conroy, Conor Moynagh. They all have the talent but Senior is a bit of a step up so most will have to wait in line.
Still we seem to have lots of options and talent unlike other years so I think we can really give it a lash.

Gilsenan
Ronan FlanaganRory Dunne Jason McLoughlin
Josh Hayes Damien O'Reilly Mossy Corr
Declan Mc Kiernan David Givney
Gearoid McKiernan Barry Reilly Martin Reilly
Jack Brady Paul O Connor Martin Dunne

Of the 21s like to see Chris Conroy, Turloc Mooney and Kilian Clarke into the panel as well as the three named above I think Mc Loughlin Brady and O Conner have the presence to stand up to the plate for the Armagh game and give Hyland strength and freshness. The presence particularly of Mackey Mc je ever and Mc Cutcheon is causing us to go back to old ways that haven't and won't work, of the three of them I think Mc Keever has most to offer and would provide an impact sub to put in at a critical time . My captain would be Gearoid Mc Kiernan . I hope the managment throw everythin at Armagh, and dont do what we did against Donegal last year turning up expecting to be beaten . Believe and we can do it.

1. James Reilly (Gilsenan put himself out of contention with his second final minute mistake in as many years)
2. Jason McLoughlin (Will pick up Clarke, well worth his place)
3. James McEnroe (Putting Dunne here would surely be a mistake, has only played 1 game this year, McEnroe has done reasonably well)
4. Ronan Flanagan (Would rather see Oisin Minagh but I think Hyland will pick Flanagan for experience)
5. Damien O'Reilly
6. Alan Clarke (Best CHB we have, possible captain)
7. Feargal Flanagan (Picked for bravery and effort, can't repeat giving away the ball as he did in the closing stages last Saturday)
8. Gearoid McKiernan
9. Mossy Corr. (Must be the midfield partnership, hard to see Terry going with any other combination)
10. Cian Mackey (Hopefully he will return to his early league form where he ran the show)
11. David Givney
12. Mark McKeever
13. Jack Brady (Possibly the most mature and intelligent forward we have)
14. Eugene Keating (has had injuries all year but I think he will be picked simply because he could potentially turn it on and play a blinder, potentially)
15. Martin Dunne.

That's the team I think will start, I'd be surprised if at least 12 of those players didn't start v Armagh. The forward line has a lot of players pushing for places and it would be no surprise to see Martin Reilly or Barry Reilly in there. Killian Clarke will also push hard for a starting place and possibly Rory Dunne.

The U21 run has taken a lot of the focus off this game but hopefully the Seniors have been readying themselves in the background, I'm sure they have. We will need a massive performance to beat Armagh but they are beatable. Looking forward to it already.

Serious chance of turning over Armagh if we can stop Clarke. The problem is, you just never know what Cavan team will show up, they're consistently inconsistent.

Afraid so he done his cruciate playing for swad at the weekend, definately out for the season, he will do very well to be back for next years league from what i hear. Not good. Huge miss at least givney might get playing midfield now.

Cruciate damage, gutted for him and for Cavan, massive loss as he was always worth a few points from midfield, not ideal preparation, but thats football.

Gutted. Really tough on the young guy and will be a huge loss to Cavan. But I suppose it is a chance for someone else. It puts a lot of pressure on Davaid Givney now but he proved playing for Ulster that he is good enough. As well it may be the spur that the lads need to go out now and really get Cavan football back on the map. The u21's proved that we are as good as anyone else.

A long road back for Gearoid but with hard work and determination he will be back in the tick of things this time next year. Best of luck to him in the months ahead.

so sorry to hear about GMK injury. devasted for both him and Cavan. We really don't have too many players of his quality that we can afford the loss. It certainly is a major blow to the county ahead of the ulster championship.

Terrible pity for mckiernan poor fella buts be devestated. It is something that could save hylands job, at least he has no choice but play Givney MF now, something the majority of Cavan fans wanted anyway.
My team would look like:
James Reilly
J. Mc loughlin r. Dunne k. Clarke
J. Mc cutheon d. Mc Kiernan m mc keever
D Givney t corr
C Mackey b o Reilly
M dunne e keating
I'm stuck at the minute for a WHF and CF I would have had GMK and wing and I still don't know who for the corner
