Cavan Hurling

(Oldest Posts First)

I was at the minor game in Ashbourne last week and I was very impressed with the performance despite the result. I can see light at the end of the tunnel for Cavan hurling. I believe clubs should be encouraged to set up hurling teams within their clubs as this will improve the Cavan senior team. It is simply not good enough having just 3 serious senior teams in the county. The future is bright. I havent been around to much to see the work on the ground that is been done to improve hurling within the county. Can someone tell me more about the work done in the last few years.

Pie in the sky we are not a hurling county!

'i think that is a ignorant statement ARE YOU A GFC MEMBER OR A GAA MEMBER!!!

There is a definite increase in hurling activity and a enlargement of the hurling family. I would not say its easy but its being done and all Cavan should do is embrace it and be happy that children are getting an opportunity to play one of our Irish games. No one can doubt hurling is probally the fastest and most skilful game in the world and being Irish we should be very proud of it along with Gaelic Football.

I agree with Waynerooney y dose not every club try and start up and under 8 team im sure help will be at hand y people within the county!

Typical response

While it is good to let kids experience one of our native games, the notion that we will make any kind of strides or make any kind of impact on the hurling world is fanciful nonsense.
The reality is that, despite the inpermperate howling of the pseudo hurling people like 70mins, hurling is strong in a few counties and they are magnificent exponents of this great game. Trying to revive it in places that it never flourished is fanciful nonsense. I like many enjoy hurling but because I believe it is futile to waste time on it here, seems to entitle people to call your Gaa credentials into question. If he is so passionate about hurling then why does he not support the game he wants to promote?????
When we had a farce of a senior team nobody went to matches home or away including the judgemental 70mins.

Ochonlir, as opposed to the strides we are making in the football world??? With your logic sure we may give up on everything if we can't win or compete straight away. Give the lads time, hurling is a great game, don't be bitter - the game should be available for all to play. We need to look at Offaly, they had no history in hurling prior to the 70's. Then they started underage and started winning all Ireland in the 80's and 90's. All this from small beginnings - it can be done, but not with attitudes like yours.

Anger!

Hurling was a jolly for you and a way to get a free Jersey and kit bag. The players never mind supporters didnt turn up to games. Its fine playing hurling but despite anger from quarters like yours we need to be realistic about our chances of winning hurling all irelands. Knocking Cavan football is a great way to garner support. If it wernt for the football county board there would be no hurling at all, the hurlers ran their game into oblivion. You may not have noticed but weve had some actual underage success of late at football. Its hard enough working on football in a county as small as ours without the hurlers trying to press gang us into training for an all Ireland.

People play sport for the love of it and trying to force people to play it akin to the way the schools teach Irish isnt the way! So attack my attitude all you like but because people prefer football does not make them any less aof a Gael. A lot of hurling folk cant stand football and there is no witch hunt against them.

Ohchonlir,

Forcing people!!! to play Hurling! I dont think the CB or forcing people!!! The CB have coaches in schools for the last number of years doing 99.9% football coaching!!! Only lately has there been a change with a full time hurling coach and part time coaches.

I would hope you dont think the coaches are going around promoting the GAA and forcing children to play!! Children will play whatever sport they like. There will be some who just are better than others at certian codes of the GAA and I along with Waynerooney was at the minor game and Cavan did themselves proud!

Hurling people are not anti football far from it I no people in Cavan who coach hurling yet they have a big role in football clubs.

Anyway this thread was started to ask about what is taking place on the groun in hurling not for people to slate hurling like u Ochonlir

2009 Regional club model adopted by clubs 4/5 GFCs = 1 Hurling Club.
2010 Hurling Board consumed into Youth Board, HDOs laid off/retired.
2011 Senior team abandoned with promise of funding to juvenile development. HDA appointed.
2012 2 new GPOs for hurling appointed, (Jobbridge 9 month contracts).
Cavan Minors reach All Ireland "C" final.
Cootehill reach National Feile Final.
Hurling coaching in primary schools resumes after long period of stop/start/nothing at all.
Cootehill win Cavan U16 league,
St. Felims win U16 Monaghan League,
St. Felims win Cavan minor league?.
East Cavan Gaels win Cavan U12 league.
10 U8 county blitzes,
10 U10 county blitzes.
U12 county academy squad,
U14, U16 development squads,
County minor squad solidified.
Expansion of South Cavan development area to include Virginia and Maghera as well as the existing Munterconnaught hurling area .
New hurling entities in Ballyjamesduff and Cavan Town.
Secondary school competition, for the very first time?
Cavan Institute team for the very first time.
Inter county club blitzes, u10,12,13.
U12, 14.16 and minor club leagues.
2013?
U14 3 county club league in addition to individual leagues.
More new clubs?
County U21 side?
Raising of the present standard.

There is lots more but that's the basics. Kids are now getting the hurling that they were crying out for for so long. There is a club for every boy in the county who wants to play near to them whether that's within a football club or not. My own clubs under 12 team has played in excess of 20 games so far this year, that is what we've always wanted and with the Youth Board giving room for hurling fixtures this has become a reality and the standard had improved because of it. There are still some things that are not 100% but we are moving in the right direction. More games =more players=more clubs=increased standard. Go to any game in the county, you'll be pleasantly surprised at the standard of hurling on display. As long as the momentum built up so far is maintained then a county U21 and hopefully senior side will be returned to us in the near future for the enjoyment of all.
