Town Clubs?

(Oldest Posts First)

With the exception of Cavan Gaels I have to ask is all the town clubs in the county letting down Cavan GAA?
If you look at all the town clubs except the Gaels and to a lesser extent Kingscourt, they have done very little for the county team.

Really belturbet, Ramor Cuchullians Castlerahan all have players on or recently on the Cavan team and on the U 21 s
Bboro's Argue was one of the main reasons we won the U21 ulster final

You have a history of making things up to fertilise your little mind

Ochonlir,

I was making reference to the Cavan senior team, If you look at it with exception of the Gaels and Kingscourt very few Towns have produced players of note for the Senior team,
Is it that Town people/players by nature are fine individual footballers but they fail to gel into a county setup where people from other walks of life play,
The vast majority of good honest footballers are country lads that can take a knock and give a shoulder wiothout being down on the ground requiring attention.
Indeed it is felt by some that players from small towns in Cavan that make the County team are attention seekers.

Virginia: Jack Brady, Damien Barkey, Kevin Mulvanny
Bailieborough: Alan O'Mara, Billy O'Mara, Michael Argue
Kingscourt: Joe Dillon, Shane Grey, Barry Tully

All of the above played Minor or u21 championship this year. That's 9 from three towns.

As I have already said, other than Casvan Gaels and to a lesser extent Kingscourt very few of the small Town clubs around Cavan have supplied any good footballers for the County Senior team.
If you look at it, in the past when Cavan were succesful where did the big players come from. All country lads that were able totake a knock and give a shoulder..
Now these small Town fellows are watcking too much Television or listening to the wireless about this fellow and that fellow nearly half dead (This is in other sports) then gets up after the magic bottle and he takes his free,
Look at older players like the Ton or the spear would these fellows be seen down on the ground o no. That was only for old weamon

Have to agree with Tom,town teams not pulling their weight in Cavan. Most small country clubs achieving much more. Big populations are in cootehill, belturbet, bailieboro, ballyduff, virginia, kingscourt and of course Cavan town.apart from Gaels and kingscourt, not much to shout about in these towns.some good individual players but weak clubs

If i'm not mistaken Belturbet, Castlerahan, Ballinagh and the Gaels were the last four this year. All town teams as I have also noticed. So in closing Tom your comment is nonsense

On my lunch and I am going to attempt to go through this quickly, so forgive me if i leave anyone out, the names include runs with the minors, u21s, juniors and seniors, from town teams.
Kingscourt, Joe dillon, James farrely, barry reilly, ryan mccormack, thomas wakely.
Shercock, Killian clarke, brian sankey.
Balieborogh, alan and billy omara, michael argue.
Virginia, Jack brady, damien barkey, james mcenroe, simon cadden, anton reilly.
Ballyduff, Jamie leahy, cian mackey, flanagan x2.
Kilnaleck, Daragh mcveety, poor return from this town in fairness.
Cavan, we all know this town produces and wont name all them.
Killeshandra, Conor smith, daragh tighe, paddy king, thomas reilly
Cootehill, John mccutheon, poor return also. But i believe cootehill have a small pick as kill and drumgoon come in right to the town, they have the main street and a little bit more, maybe im wrong but thats what a cootehill man told me.
Ballyhaise dosent qualify as a town does it? cullivan, tierney, moran mccormack.
Arva, Kevin bouchier, ciaran brady, morris brothers.
Belturbet, jayo, damien reilly, poor return from belturbet too.
Ballinagh, Mcdermott, Patrick carrol, gaynor for a while!, pauric reilly.

Thats just off the top of my head dont be afraid to add names or even towns i have forgotten!! It should put an end to this silly argument. happy lunching!

That was the Post that I started with and I still stick to my well found views that Cavan GAA( Senior Team) has been very poorly served by all the small Town clubs.
If you see it this way how long has it beeen since the Gaels have been tested by a small town team in Cavan. Leave last years final aside where most people would feel that the Gaels were hard done by.
That has shows when the Gaels compete in ULster against teams that played a better standard of football leading up to being victors in that county.
It is no fault of the Gaels that a Cavan county final is of a poor standard, indeed if the opposition was of higher quality the Gaels would enjoy the victories even more.
I do hope that this years final is just not a run in the park for them and indeed for the good of Cavan football and help to promote GAA outside of Cavan Town for a country team to defeat the Gaels would do a world of good for the Gaa in Cavan.
