Senior Championship 2011

With a month to go who do people reckon could do well. If the league is anything to go by it could be the most open in years. Teams like Redhills, Ramor and Ballinagh to throw into the mix with the Gaels, Kingscourt and Mullahoran.

It would be good to see a team like Redhills do well, seeing that they were a junior team a few years ago

Yeah, some serious work must have being done at underage level in Redhills. They have some great talent, it would be a breath of fresh air to the stale club scene in the past.

In my view, league form rarely carries over to championship for the majority of teams in Cavan. In alot of cases, in-form (normally mediocre) teams are knackered come championship time due to a huge league effort with a smallish panel. Players are poorly rested and they are poorly conditioned going into championship matches; not able to 'step-it-up' a level. Timing is critical and teams that have managed to win or compete in county finals in previous years (e.g. Denn and Mullahoran ) have had poor enough league runs on the build-up to the championship. Just an opinion and some food for thought

Good point Con but look at Kingscourt last year, they carried there good form into the championship. I'm sure there are examples both ways.

there's always an exception to the rule, but as a general comment, I think my observation is closer to the mark .. for the smaller clubs at least

the gaels are having a poor league this year but i still think will be the big favorites for the championship. i believe they will be a completely different team come championship and this league form could be a plan to have less teams talking them up. however i hope someone different wins it this year

Gaels, Ballinagh, Ramor and lacken. Impossible to call who will prevail from this group. Obviously as said above gaels will lift it come championship, but ballinagh and ramor have impressive results in the league and lacken are always hard beat. Im going to call it now, two finalists will be from this group. (if draw allows?). Redhills will be hard beat too, although they have a relatively small panel and have lost a few to america already so they may run out of steam, although i hope not. On their day, castlerahan are a good team, but they are not contenders in my eyes. The current champions, kingscourt are a proud club and are as traditional as they come, they will defend the oliver plunkett cup like their lives depend on it. Mullahoran are mullahoran will be there or there abouts, have injected a bit of youth into their team over the past year and could pay dividends soon. Lavey seem to be picking up wins now, and are already in championship mode, due to the fact they must win games to stay in div 1. Gowna are not the team they used to be, have bred a lot of young lads into the team and are a few years off competing again.

i would agree with the opinion that there are other teams competing for the championship this year, but i think the usual suspects will still be there come championship semi-finals. i just think it will be harder for them to get there! I will say that cavan gaels and kingscourt will be there, and i dont think i have to justify that! Ramor are always around semi-finals and i think they will de der. the only way i think they wont be there is if ballinagh defeat them in the group game! ballinagh need to push on in championship dis year and i think they have come up another level. they have missed players all year and yet their still third in the league! so the 3rd semi spot is a toss up between ballinagh and ramor in my eyes!

the 4th spot is hotly contested. my vote goes to mullahorn, given that they are in a group were they only have to win one game to go through. i think they will beat lavey! depending on who they meet in the semis i think they will be der. if they meet cavan gaels for example then i think cuculains/ redhills/ castlerahn could take that place. but bar meeting the gaels i think mullahorns experience will take them through against more or less any other team.

My four semi finalists:
1: cavan Gaels
2: Kingscourt
3: ramor/ballinagh (depending on group game)
4: Mullahorn

Its an Open draw in the quarter final so the chances of all thoes teams avoiding eachother are slim, Gales should be there and prob Kingscourt too but there are a group of about 5 or 6 who could also make the semi final..

My predictions are on the basis that these teams will avoid each other. if they do i hink that will be the semi final line up.

In one word who do you think will win it? To start:

Kingscourt

i can understand why people saying redhills could win it but in my opinion they have hit their best form to early and i dont think they will carry this form to championship..they have already had a great year though and cant take anything away from them.i think whoever comes out of the gaels, ballinagh, ramor, lacken group will win the championship.ramor going well enough in the league and dont think they have hit top form yet its only a matter of time til the 3 u21 championships they won show what they can do at senior level.but if theres anyone who can cause an upset its ballinagh there having a strong league campaign and have had some poor results which i honestly believe could stand to them which might sound odd.the gaels are the gaels i think they will top group anyway..lacken not going well but could do serious damage to a team on there day.

All of the teams mentioned above are all the teams you would expect to be in and about the latter stages of the Championship. Same teams every year. I expect Cavan Geals to win the Championship this year as they will be hungry for revenge after last years defeat to Kingscourt. A team i expect that could suprise a few people is last years Intermediate Champions, Drumalee... Now i know most of the people on here will disagree with me, because they have only come up from Intermediate level, but i think they have a seriously strong and young team. They are the form team in Divsion 2 at the minute and look to be on their way to Divsision 1. If they don't do well this year, expect them to be serious contenders in the next few years!
