Gaels defend minor amalgamation

August 01, 2012
Cavan Gaels have defended the club's decision to amalgamate at minor level.

The club have joined with Killygarry and will play under the name Oliver Plunketts in the Minor division 1 championship. A competition that the Gaels have won on eleven occasions.

However, a club spokesman explained to the Anglo-Celt that holiday commitments and other sports have forced them to amalgamate with Killygarry.

"There are several ways you can look at it. People are away on holidays, the league was full of amalgamations and an amalgamation side ended up winning it," stated the Gaels.

"It's hard to compete against two or three clubs every year, it definitely is. But as regarding criticism, I don't think anybody would knock the club for trying something different to bring young lads on."
