McCoy, Joe

The Late Joe McCoy The death of Joe McCoy of Hackeststown over the Christmas removed the last remaining link with a Ballybrack team that won the Wicklow Junior Football Championship back in 1936. Joe was a fine footballer but was out in a time of limited opportunity. He played for Hacketstown Ballybrack and Rathdangan and also got on the Wicklow Minor Football team. He was one of the stars of the county JFC final of '36 but according to the 'Wicklow People' report wasted enough scoring chances to have won the match on his own. For the record the final score was Ballybrack 1-3; Kilcoole 0-1. That was a great year for the Wicklow end of the Hacketstown parish. Rathdangan won the SFC; Ballybrack made it a rare parish double by winning the JFC while Ballymanus made a brave bid for the IF title. Our sympathy to Joe's son Fay, his daughter Mary and his extended family. Courtesy of the Wicklow People 2nd January 2008
