The Late Patrick Robinson A devoted Liverpool fan died just minutes after watching his beloved side become champions of Europe in sudden death that has stunned Carlow town. Patrick Robinson (20) of 43 Burrin Manor, Carlow died instantly in Scraggs Alley pub while basking in the aftermath of Liverpool's victory in the European Champions League. Patrick who was just a month away from his 21st birthday, collapsed in the midst of a pub jubilant in Liverpool's success, but despite the best efforts of staff and his friends the popular young man sadly passed away. Patrick had enjoyed the penalty shoot out and approximately 10 minutes later while the celebrations were in full swing he suddenly collapsed without warning. His death has been a devastating blow to his family, none more so that his devoted mother Denise Owens a native of Rathnapish, Carlow and his father John. Paddy as he was known to his family and friends was described this week as an outgoing and friendly young man who "lived for Liverpool". Every since he was 3 or 4 years of age there wasn't a Liverpool kit that he didn't have and he eagerly followed the team fortunes through the good times and bad. Paddy also applied the same spirit and enthusiasm to his own sporting efforts and played in goal of New Oaks Boys soccer team. He also played Gaelic football with Palatine GAA where once again his popularity endeared his to so many. Other great interests of Paddy's were snooker, music and just like all young people he was really into looking his best and was always head to toe in the latest fashions. Paddy was also devoted to his girlfriend Lisa Meaney, who like all who knew Paddy is heartbroken following his sudden loss. At the age of 10 Paddy moved to Carlow from Harrown in London and lived with his mother and grandparents Margaret and Sean Owens in Bathapish before moving to Burrin Manor. A past pupil of Bishop Foley NS and Carlow CBS, Paddy earlier jobs were in Doyle's Super Valu and Costcutters Carlow where he was popular with staff and customers alike. Just 3 months ago Paddy began working in Wyeth Medica in Newbridge and was settling in well and enjoying his work. "He was as fit as a fiddle with no medical problems that anyone knew of...it's such a shock, especially to Denise who lived for him." said Paddy's uncle John Owens. "Nigel Byrne, Liam Corcoran and the staff at Scraggs and Patrick's friends did everything they could in the emergency. But it was all just so sudden....he went from Scraggs to the morgue," John sadly added. Paddy's remains were taken to Holy Family Church Askea and Requiem Mass was celebrated on Saturday with burial afterwards to St Mary's Cemetery. New Oaks Boys held a guard of honour while the entire Mass reflected Paddy's many interests and talents. "There was so many young people in the church and the dignity they showed was remarkable.....He had just so many friends, " John explained. As Paddy's remains were taken on their final journey to St Mary's Cemetery the strains of the Liverpool anthem " You'll Never Walk Alone" poignantly echoed around the church. Patrick is survived by his mother Denise, father John, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends. Courtesy of the Carlow Nationalist 3rd June 2005
