Hickey, Jack

The Late Jack Hickey The unexpected and untimely death of Fenagh's Jack Hickey severs another link with the Fenagh Junior football championship winning team of 1960. Playing football from an early age in the 50's, he became one of the best club defenders in the game, manning the half back line in all positions. However he virtually made the No. 6 jersey his own. Noted for his sure high fielding and his great ability to read the game plus his great desire to cut off attacks made Jack a household name in the 50's and 60's. Like his son John, Jack played County Junior with Carlow in the early 60's. When his playing career was over Jack turned his hand to training and coached Fenagh to Junior success in '73 and again in '85; Junior B the first year of its inauguration. 1986 was probably the sweetest of all when Fenagh coming from nine points down at half time against neighbours Fighting Cocks in Dr. Cullen Park to win the JFC final by four points. Jack had a keen interest in Gaelic Games and even when he was not attending a game, he had to have first hand information. He held several officerships in the club over the years and his advice was widely sought. Testimony to this was the very large attendance at the house, removal on Saturday and burial in Newtown Cemetery on Sunday morning. Fenagh GFC players and members past and present formed guards of honour on both occasions. Courtesy of The Carlow Nationalist September 2002
