Monaghan, Margaret

December 03, 2013
Margaret Monaghan, Maple Drive, Bagenalstown, who passed away at St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny on Tuesday 5 November will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. The former Margaret Haughney was daughter of Peg and the late Jim Haughney, St Lazerian Terrace, Leighlinbridge. She was one of a family of nine children and is survived by her four brothers and four sisters.
Margaret suffered ill health throughout her life, and in her last months was hospitalised in St Vincent's, Elm Park and St Luke's.
In her younger days, Margaret worked as a marker with Waterford Glass - a very specialised skill. In later years she was employed by Campbell Catering when it was contracted to the Braun (Ireland) personal care products plant on O'Brien Road, Carlow.
Margaret and Robert (Bob) Monaghan from Bagenalstown married on 28 August 1978 in Dublin. A dedicated follower of the Erin's Own Hurling Club in Begenalstown, Margaret founded its first ladies' committee some 15 years ago.
The Monaghan family has a deep involvement with the club - Bob's late father, Jack Monaghan, was a founder-member in 1935, also playing with Erin's Own and the Carlow county team. She was a woman who greatly enjoyed travel and accompanied by husband Bob, liked nothing more than taking off in their camper van to visit their son Edward (Eddie) in Bordeaux. On their last trip to France, the Monaghan's also took in a visit to the shrine in Lourdes.
Reading was a great pastime of Margaret's - Maeve Binchy was her favourite author. Her passing at the age of 56 is deeply regretted by her family, extended family, neighbours and friends. Margaret was waked at home before her remains were removed on Friday morning (8 November) to St Andrew's Parish Church, Bagenalstown, where they were received by Fr Declan Foley, PP, assisted by Fr Tom Lalor, PP, Leighlinbridge and Fr Ger Ahern, PP, Abbeyleix and former curate in Leighlinbridge.
The readings at Mass were by Anna Monaghan, sister-in-law, while the Prayers of the Faithful were recited by Margaret's sister Bernadette and sister-in-law Kathleen Haughney.
Sons John and Eddie brought forward the Offertory gifts. Afterwards, a ceremony was held in Newlands Cross Crematorium, Dublin. Margaret is mourned by her husband Robert (Bob), sons John (Paulstown) and Eddie (Brodeaux), daughter Anna (Maple Drive), grandson Jack, brothers Seamus, Sean, Christy (all Leighlinbridge), Paul (London), sisters Marian Grey (London), Bernadette Haughney (St Lazerian's Terrace, Leighlinbridge), Siobhan Haughney (St Lazerian's Terrace) and Aine Ward (Bagenalstown). She is also survived by her mother Peg, daughter-in-law Tatiana, extended family, good neighbours and many friends.
