Molloy, Martin

February 21, 2009
The late Martin Molloy One of Carlow's finest footballers and gentlemen died suddenly on Monday night at his home in Rathvilly. Martin Molloy from Ricketstown, Rathvilly had given a lifetime of service to the GAA both in his own county and beyond which included a decade playing in the county jersey in the 1950s. He played his first game for Carlow in 1950 when they faced Louth in Croke Park. But perhaps his finest time came in the 1953/'54 season when he was part of the Carlow team to reach the NFL final after beating Kerry and Armagh on the way, both All-Ireland finalists from the previous championships. The Rathvilly native played his club football for Clonmore for most of his career as there had been no club in Rathvilly at the time and won championships in 1955 and 1956. In 1967 he returned to his native Rathvilly to line out in full forward in the winning JFC team.
